GOP Chalks Up One Last Victory

“One lawsuit, one recount and 535 missing ballots later, Republican Bob Beauprez
yesterday was declared the winner in Colorado’s newly drawn 7th Congressional
District. . . .. The final count showed Mr. Beauprez the winner with 81,789 votes,
putting him 121 ballots ahead of Democratic rival Mike Feeley.”

In Debt Up to Their Donkey Ears

“The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) racked up millions of dollars in
debt during its failed bid to retain control of the Senate in the November midterm
elections. Post-election reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC)
show that, as of Nov. 25, the DSCC owed $5.7 million but only had $442,000 in the
bank. By contrast, the Democrats’ counterparts at the National Republican Senatorial
Committee (NRSC) enter the 2004 election cycle with a surplus of more than $1.4
million in hard money…”

War: What Is It Good With?

“Members of Pomona College’s Conservative Union dished up a rebuttal this month to
what they called the…’dirty hippies’ who were fasting as part of a 56-hour anti-war
protest. While the ascetics questioned American foreign policy, the conservatives
asked only one thing: War, what is it good with?

“Potato salad, for one. And ‘all-American beverages’ like Coronas and Heinekens,
according to union members. Those were just some of the vittles available, along with
hot dogs and ‘warburgers’ at a Barbeque for a Free Iraq held as a counterprotest and
‘parody’ of the fast.”

- Columnist Richard Morgan, Chronicle of Higher Education

Same ‘Ol Jimmy

“Former President Jimmy Carter yesterday accepted the Nobel Peace Prize, which the
awarding committee had called a ‘kick in the leg’ to President Bush’s policy on Iraq,
saying war ‘is always an evil.’

“ ‘War may sometimes be a necessary evil,’ Mr. Carter told an audience of about 1,000
people, including his wife, Rosalynn, and Norway’s King Harald and Queen Sonja. ‘But
no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to
live together in peace by killing each other’s children,’ he said.”

The Bill & Saddam Paper Dance

“During the Cinton administration, documents were repeatedly requested by
congressional committees, but Congress was told they did not exist or could not be
found. When they were produced at the last minute - before subpoenas were issued or
some other form of legal action taken - the volume of papers was enough to make eyes
glaze over. Then the administration hoped to persuade reporters and the public that
it had been forthcoming.

“Now, after years of denying he has weapons of mass destruction, deceiving the world
and delaying inspections, Saddam Hussein has released more than 12,000 pages of text
that basically claim he has no such weapons. . . . Why is so much information about
weapons necessary if they do not exist? How does one prove a negative? Who takes
Saddam Hussein at his word?”

- Columnist Cal Thomas

What Did You Do In the War, Daddy?

“It’s becoming a game: How long into any John Kerry speech, interview, or op/ed before
the junior senator from Massachusetts mentions his service in Vietnam? Last week, on
‘Meet the Press,’ it took two questions. . . . By my count, Kerry mentioned Vietnam
nine times during the interview - often straining to link his service to unrelated
issues.”

- Columnist Peter Beinart, New Republic

Let It Snow

“(Just-appointed Treasury Secretary John) Snow, who served with me when I chaired the
National Commission on Economic Growth and Tax Reform, is a terrific guy. He was a
strong voice on the Tax Reform Commission and is totally committed to the commission’s
conclusion it is time to replace the failed tax system with a new simplified tax code
that taxes income only once at a much lower rate on both labor and capital.”

- Columnist and former congressman Jack Kemp

Snow Job

“(T)he first thing that (just-appointed Treasury Secretary John) Snow did (Monday) was
dump his membership at the Augusta National Golf Club - the private club that is home
to the Masters golf tournament. The club’s men-only policy has made it a prime (New
York) Times target - and Snow could expect a lot of grief from Democrats and other
Times acolytes during his confirmation hearings.

“If he’s so reluctant to risk offending the Gray Lady on these grounds, whatever will
happen when SERIOUS business is under discussion? It’s a cause for concern.”

- New York Post editorial

In Defense of Freedom

“The additional powers granted to the government (by the USA PATRIOT Act and the
Homeland Security bill) will at least arguably make it easier to protect us, but at
what cost? (Texas Rep. Dick) Armey grants that we would be safer with a cop on every
corner and a spy camera in every hall, and he acknowledges that we might even be more
secure if we allowed the government to encourage everyone to spy on everyone else and
carry a national ID card. But, he asks, ‘Will we be free?’ That question remains
unanswered.”

- David Keene, chairman, American Conservative Union, The Hill, 12/11/02

Flying the Union’s Unfriendly Skies

“Monday’s bankruptcy filing (by United Airlines) occurred less than two weeks after
United’s militant mechanics overwhelmingly rejected a $700 million cost-cutting
agreement that would have reduced their pay by up to 7 percent. Now, their shares are
worthless. Moreover, if United is to emerge from bankruptcy as a viable airline, its
workers will have to offer significantly higher wage and work-rule concessions than
they have considered to date. This is particularly true for its pilots, some of whom
earn more than $300,000 per year for working 80 hours per month. For the mechanics,
the $700-million agreement they rejected earlier this month will seem like a pittance.”
