Depends on Your Definition of "Big Tent"

My new "friends" over at the Democratic Underground really should consider
switching to decaf. They remind me of Tweak on South Park. Talk about
hyperactive crazies.

Anyway, we got a kick out of their rules for participating on their
discussion boards. Get this: "This is a 'big tent' message board. We
welcome a wide range of progressive opinion. You will likely encounter many
points of view here that you disagree with."

Well, no, probably not. See, that "big tent" proclamation is followed by
the following caveat: "If you think overall that George W. Bush is doing a
swell job, or if you wish to see Republicans win, or if you are generally
supportive of conservative ideals, please do not register to post, as you
will likely be banned."

Banned from the big tent. Good one. Being a hypocrite MUST be a
pre-requisite for being a Democrat.

PC Police Nail New Victim's Hide to Wall

For a few months now, there has been a poem circulating around the Internet
poking fun at illegal aliens and welfare recipients. It includes lines such
as, ""Welfare checks, they make you wealthy, Medicaid it keep you healthy."
I've had hundreds of people forward it to me. It's one of those harmless
"sticks and stones" things.

Alas, we don't live in a "sticks and stones" culture in this country any
longer. You can't tell jokes about anyone these days except lawyers and
blondes...and even that's "iffy". But especially not about minorities and
the poor. Uh-uh. That'll get you into a heap of trouble. Just ask
Arkansas' top emergency official, 72-year-old Bud Harper.

Bud committed the unpardonable sin of finding the poem funny and forwarding
it to some folks in his department. "It was just a poem that I got that I
thought was funny and you know how you exchange things with people," he told
the Associated Press.

Wham! Someone who received the poem got their little feelings hurt and made
federal case out of it. Exhibiting what typically passes for a backbone
among Republicans, Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said the email was not
"acceptable" and accepted Bud's "resignation."

This politically correct stuff is really getting out of hand. I mean, I was
going to tell my joke about the pollock, the wop and the mick walking into a
bar today, but now...

"I guess by now you've all seen, the Pentagon today released those graphic
photos of Odai and Qusai dead. The pictures were so gruesome, they cut their
hair, cleaned them up. . . . To clean them up they used this morticians
putty. It's the same stuff that they use over at '60 Minutes.'"

Earth to Democrats, Earth to Democrats...

"...[T]he national Democrat party seems to have lost its marbles. ...Just
look at their presidential candidates: it's like they're lost in a time
warp. ...And Dennis Kucinich -- a long-time member of Congress -- now calls
for legislation -- I love this -- to ban 'mind control' weapons in outer
space. ...It makes you wonder if at their next presidential debate, the
Democrats are all going to show up wearing aluminum-foil helmets to protect
their brain waves from the mother ship!"

Onward Christian...Taxpayers?

"Alabama's new governor is trying to persuade voters to approve the biggest
tax increase in state history by telling them it is their Christian duty.
And for a state in the Bible Belt, that might seem like a winning strategy.
Instead, Republican Gov. Bob Riley's $1.2 billion tax package is alienating
even the Christian Coalition and other supporters, who see Riley as a
 Judas."

"Chicken D's" Turn Tail & Run...Again

"Eleven of 12 Democrat Texas state senators are in Albuquerque, holed up at
a posh hotel with the blessing of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and
protection being provided by the New Mexico State Police. . . . It is the
second time in three months that Democrat lawmakers have fled Texas to block
a Republican drive to redraw the state's congressional districts. During
the regular spring session in May, Texas Republicans tried to bring
redistricting legislation to a vote in the GOP-controlled state House. But
51 Democrats in that chamber fled Austin for Oklahoma. Their efforts killed
that bill."

Closing Under-Utilized Post Offices

"The President's Commission on the United States Postal Service, charged
with studying the efficiency of the organization, adopted a report earlier
this month that called for repealing laws that limit the service's
flexibility to close certain offices. The subcommittee recommendation,
adopted July 17, advocates forming a commission to lead the way to
consolidate or close processing and distribution sites. But it is unclear
what offices might be targeted and what the criteria would be. The document
also recommends offering services in other locations such as banks, grocery
stores and convenience stores. The final report is due on President Bush's
desk by Thursday. Any law change would require congressional approval."

- The Oklahoman, 7/27/03

Writing On the Wall

"We don't disagree with those who look fondly on small village post offices
as important centers of their communities. But faced with the reality of a
high-tech world and growing competition, we understand the reasoning behind
a proposal announced earlier this month for the U.S. Postal Service to
replace low-activity post offices with kiosks at places such as stores and
malls.

"...As unfortunate as it may be, closing post offices that serve a
relatively few number of people probably is a necessity if the Postal
Service is to survive without becoming dependent on taxpayer subsidies. Do
we like the idea? Not particularly, but we are living in an economic era
when a lot of tough decisions have to be made, and this appears to be one of
them."

Out of Gas

"There has been too much emphasis on natural gas for electric generation.
Most new electric generation facilities added to the grid since 1998 are
fueled by natural gas. . . . Congress must address the relationship between
gas prices and the increasing dependence of electric generators on natural
gas to fuel new generation facilities. This policy must recognize that our
nation's future electricity needs cannot be met almost exclusively with
natural gas, but rather with a reasonable and workable combination of
conservation efforts, renewable energy, clean coal technology and safe
nuclear power."

- Chuck Warrington of the American Public Gas Association

Tanker War

"The average flying tanker in use today is 43 years old, making the tanker
fleet the Air Force's oldest combat weapons system. These planes are as much
liabilities as assets. With one-third of the fleet always being repaired,
USA Today reported last year that the Joint Chiefs of Staff were concerned a
shortage of operational tankers would make it harder to wage the
then-looming war against Iraq.

"Who could blame them? When the average tanker now flying rolled off the
assembly line in 1960, Dwight Eisenhower was president, 'Gunsmoke' was the
biggest show on TV, and no one outside Liverpool had ever heard of the
Beatles.

"Because the Air Force could not afford to buy replacement tankers, it
developed a lease program for 100 new Boeing 767 tankers that reduces the
cost to taxpayers, speeds up tanker deliveries by three years, and saves
billions in maintenance costs.

"This innovative approach gained support from President Bush, the Pentagon
and large majorities on Capitol Hill. And with good reason: our pilots get
out of the oldest tankers much sooner than anticipated, with 67 of the new
tankers delivered in the next six years. (An earlier scenario would have
delivered only one plane over the same period.)

"Now, with congressional action looming, a few special-interest critics are
making a desperate bid to derail the program. Led by Ralph Nader and Common
Cause, the group is a crazy-quilt mix of liberals and libertarians, all of
whom seem to have it in for the Bush White House, the Pentagon or both."
