TSA: Thousands Standing Around

Our friend Tim Ziegler of FreeRepublic.com gave us a shout from Seattle,
Washington, yesterday morning. He was calling on his cell phone from the
airport to let us know that the line at the security gate being operated by
our new-and-improved, government-run Transportation Security Agency
stretched out to the parking garage! Seems the TSA folks were in a staff
meeting and couldn't be bothered to actually work at the security checkpoint
while all those travelers were waiting to board planes. Priorities, you
know.

Yeah, federalizing these people was a GREAT idea.

Glory Days for the McGoverniks

"In Vietnam, America's loss (and that of the South Vietnamese people) was
the left's triumph. And like an elderly ex-athlete boring everyone silly by
going on endlessly about past glories, the left just won't get over
 Vietnam."

- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 6/16/03

I Want My S-U-Veee

"We see that Al Sharpton is just the latest left-wing hypocrite to be
exposed for tooling around in a gas-guzzling SUV. But here's the fun new
twist: His 2001 Ford Explorer is being repossessed, if anyone can even find
it. Ford Motor Credit Co. has filed suit in Manhattan Supreme Court after
Sharpton stopped paying $1,127.95 a month in November and bounced a check
for $3,600 in February, the New York Post reports."

Maybe Flag Burners Have a Point?

"Chuck, I am a veteran of the US Navy. I have hated every instance of USA
flag burning I have seen. But if our legislature keeps making
unconstitutional laws, hiking their own pay and privilege while more
deserving citizens struggle to get a job, allowing judges to deny juries the
right to decide matters of law as well as matters of fact, allowing our
nation to be overrun by illegal immigrants, and taxing us to death for
entitlement programs, I might start burning the flag in public myself. So
NO, I don't want a constitutional amendment that outlaws flag-burning."

- News & Views reader Bob Hurt of Clearwater, FL

Witch Hunters on the Run

The bureaucrats in Massachusetts didn't have a very fun day yesterday, as
those of you who contacted the Waltham Public School district and the
Department of Social Services can attest!

The folks on the other end of the line were NOT happy about being questioned
on their harassment of the home-schooling Bryant family (see yesterday's
News & Views). The ol' bureaucrat two-step shuffle was in full swing.
Dodging, evading, passing the buck...it was beautiful to watch as the day
unfolded. Here's just one report from a reader who called the DSS gal
yesterday:

"Just wanted to let you know I called Susan Etscovitz and got her voice
mail. It was full, so I called back. When I called back the lady that
answered admitted she knew it was full before connecting me to her voice
mail, so I wonder why she connected me. She told me to call back tomorrow.

"I asked for Susan Etscovitz's supervisor and was told she wasn't there. I
asked if there was anyone else I could leave a message with and at this
point the woman was getting really angry & nasty and said no I couldn't
leave a message. She told me how busy the switchboard was. I asked if she
knew why everyone was calling and she said of course she did. I said OK, I
just wanted to make sure and she hung up!"

Thanks to everyone who took time to call and email. Now, if you'd like to
send a note or card of encouragement to the Bryant family and offer up a
little moral support for their fight against the Empire, their address is:

George & Kim Bryant
9 Gale Street
Waltham, MA 02453

This is far from over. The court date to decide whether or not the
government will physically remove the Bryants' children from their home was
postponed indefinitely on Thursday. I'll keep you posted as I learn of
developments.

Publik Skool Kids Don't Make the Grade

"This was the first year in which (Massachusetts) seniors statewide were
denied diplomas if they failed the state's high school test, the
Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System exam, or MCAS. (Karl) Kearns
was one of some 4,800 seniors who didn't make the cut.

"...The city of Lawrence is graduating less than 60 percent of its 437
seniors, the lowest passage rate in the state. In Chelsea, 64 percent are
passing. In Springfield, it's 69 percent, and in Fitchburg, 74 percent, not
including handfuls of recently awarded waivers. . . .

"Even before this year's tests, parents organized against MCAS, teachers
were suspended for not administering the test, lawmakers held hearings and
student boycotts were common."

- Associated Press, 6/15/03

Time for a Parent Revolt

"Parents who are angry that their children won't get into college or earn
enough to support themselves because of the exams ought to stage a revolt,
but not the kind being sponsored by anti-testing groups around the nation.
Several organizations now advocate abandoning so-called high-stakes testing;
and in some states, groups have organized to boycott the test. The Los
Angeles Unified School Board voted unanimously in April to oppose
implementation of the statewide test for graduation next year, but this is
like shooting the messenger instead of facing the problem.

"A far better solution would be for parents - and other taxpayers - to
refuse to support schools that fail to teach. Funding for education has
increased exponentially over the last 40 years, but the quality of education
hasn't kept pace. Requiring students to pass graduation exams before
receiving their diplomas was supposed to make schools more accountable. So
far, the only ones being held responsible are the students. If we're willing
to deny diplomas to seniors who can't demonstrate they've earned them, maybe
we ought to deny paychecks to school administrators and teachers who aren't
doing their jobs."

- Columnist Linda Chavez

One Plus One Equals Three

"The Sacramento Bee reports that Lauren Hammond, a member of the City
Council of California's capital, recently 'dissed' Jim Sweeney, the city's
superintendent of schools. The paper quotes Hammond as follows:

*** QUOTE ***

"I don't doubt that Jim Sweeney loves children and had dedicated his life's
career to improving education," she said. "The school district has done some
wonderful things . . . but (on state tests) half the students are still
below the 50th percentile. That's a problem."

*** END QUOTE ***

"It's not clear if Hammond is a product of the Sacramento schools, but her
father was an elementary-school teacher in Compton, near Los Angeles. In any
case, we suppose it is a problem if the public schools are producing adults
who don't understand that half the kids are below the 50th percentile by
definition."
