Do We Have To Let Him Back In?

"The Rev. Al Sharpton yesterday said he's been promised visas by Iraq and
plans to lead a delegation to Baghdad on Dec. 8, the deadline for Saddam
Hussein to produce a list of all his weapons of mass death."

- New York Post columnist Deborah Orin

Recount!

"With only 54 open offices, (House freshmen) had to go through a lottery
(for office assignments). . . . The freshman who got No. 1 was none other
than Katherine Harris, the controversial Florida secretary of state who was
demonized by Democrats during the presidential race debacle. When she was
named as the first pick, a resounding cry of 'recount' filled the room. So
who says Republicans don't have a sense of humor?"

- Jon Ralston, "Flash," 11/21/02

Daschle's Rant

"(Senate MINORITY Leader Tom) Daschle said that Conservative talk radio
programs come very close to inciting people to violence. . . . Let's Compare
the tone of ANY of Rush Limbaugh's programs with the tone and rhetoric of
ANY of the following:

* James Carville
* Paul Begala
* Al Gore
* Terry McAuliffe
* Maureen Dowd
* Barbra Streisand
* Hillary Rodham Clinton Rodham
* The Nobel Peace Prize Selection Committee
* All of the Baldwins"

- Rich Galen, "Mullings," 11/21/02

How Would Jesus Vote?

"Following a growing trend among advocacy groups, the Democratic National
Committee Thursday announced its latest get-out-the-vote effort designed to
appeal to church-going Americans.

"DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe said the 'How Would Jesus Vote?' program is
designed to 'tap into the conscience of America's faith based voters,' by
comparing public policy with the teachings of Jesus Christ. McAuliffe also
said the new initiative was created in an attempt to soften what he called
'an increasingly sharp and shrill edge,' in American politics.

" 'Would Jesus starve schoolchildren? Would Jesus take away the Social
Security of seniors? Would Jesus poison the environment? These are some of
the questions people need to ask themselves the next time they step into the
voting booth,' McAuliffe said.

"...Further demonstrating the Democratic Party's prowess in building diverse
coalitions, McAuliffe said similar programs appealing to non-Christians
would also be launched in advance of the 2004 presidential elections.
Additional programs slated for launch next year include the 'How Would the
Buddha Vote?' 'How Would Confucius Vote?' 'How Would Yahweh Vote?' and the
'How Would Mohammed Vote?' initiatives, McAuliffe said."

It didn't really happen. Though we wouldn't exactly be surprised if it
did.)

Chalk Up Another GOP Win

"With the final votes tallied in the (Colorado) 7th Congressional District
race, Republican Bob Beauprez hangs onto his lead to beat Democratic
opponent Mike Feeley by 122 votes.. . . The results make this the closest
congressional race in state history. It is also within the
one-half-of-one-percent margin between winner and loser that triggers an
automatic recount.. . . The Secretary of State's office says a recount will
not begin until after the vote is certified on Nov. 27."

Take Two $100-Aspirins & Call Me in the Morning

"Al Gore took another step to the left last week, telling an audience in New
York that he now favors a national single-payer health insurance system. He
offered no details, but a spokesman says a speech on the subject is in the
works.

"A Canada-style single-payer scheme would mean a major decline in US health
care -- just ask a Canadian who has had to wait weeks for the results of an
AIDS test, or months for cancer radiation therapy, or more than a year for a
hip replacement -- and I doubt that Americans are any keener on the idea now
than they were when Hillary Clinton was peddling it eight years ago. A
single-payer plan was on the ballot in Oregon this month; voters crushed it
in a landslide. The fact that Gore thinks it would be a good idea is one
more reason to steer clear of Gore in '04."

- Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby

The Real Epidemic Is Trial Lawyers

"Lawyers have filed a class-action lawsuit against McDonald's on behalf of
New York children who have suffered health problems, including diabetes,
high blood pressure, and obesity.

"In federal court in Manhattan on Wednesday, a lawyer alleged that the
fast-food chain has created a national epidemic of obese children. Samuel
Hirsch argued that the high fat, sugar and cholesterol content of McDonald's
food is ''a very insipid, toxic kind of thing'' when ingested regularly by
young kids.

"The plaintiffs include a Bronx teen who ate every meal at McDonald's for
three years while living in a homeless shelter. Another is a 13-year-old boy
from Staten Island who says he ate at McDonald's food three to four times a
week and is now 5-foot-4 and 278 pounds."
