I finally got round to carrying out my long-overdue chanter oil change
(olive oil liquid paraffin) today and, in consequence of having to clean
it more thoroughly than usual, devised a novel (to me at least) means of
cleaning and re-oiling the bore which I hereby toss into the

Whereas I was talking about adapting household items for simple bore
cleaning and oiling, you do have an excellent point about polishing. Cotton
buds are nowhere near tight enough for that specialist task. Horses for
courses and all that.

I agree that it doesn't generally much matter. Facing them all up/down only
serves to equalise the effect of gravity on them (quite unnecessary as
they're so light). With a stock open to the centre, I used to face mine
inward for much the same reasons as Barry Philip.
