Hi Nick, As far as I can say from my own experience TeX, that is both plain TeX and ConTeXt, treat the subscripts differently according to whether there is also a superscript or not: please see the following examples: \starttext Compare $a_{b}'a_{b}$ and $a_{b}'a_{b}^{}$ \stoptext Best
