When using nested fences, if one set the size of the outer one, it applies

Of old I have found the wolf fence tactics useful: Put for example an X at the
beginning of a suspected section and somewhat further a Y. OIf they bracket the
culprit the offending space will be between them. Otherwise narrow the fence.

Hi,
Is it possible to automatically have the inner fence _not_ change its
size with the outer one?

interesting. Using it you can use matlab-like syntax for writing matrices:

Any hints how to achieve this?
Surprisingly, this is not as simple as it may seem at first glance. Some
time ago, I had written a module to achieve this. See attached. The usage
is:
\usemodule[simplematrix]
\definesimplematrix[MATRIX][fence=bracket]

The delimiter is of the wrong color (black instead of red), and the
clause after \fence is red. I am doing something wrong or is it a bug.
Just not yet done .. coloring such math thingies is somewhat tricky ... added
