Hi,

Thanks for that info. So, when I used "Latin Modern" as the font
definition, Context falls back to a system defined default? Was that
the reason why in that situation, Context was able to display the open
box, though not able to display Malayalam?

Yes, it is. I wanted them as two lines, but one below the other. If I
don't use \par, they become one line. May be you will be able to
understand my requirement if I tell what these are. The first of the
pair is one of the many syllables in a text analysed, the numbers
inside the parentheses are its rank and frequency proportion. So, to
make sense, they have to be together. And, it looks pretty if the pairs
are lined up nicely.

Thanks for this. But, I changed to natural tables as suggested by
Kausika and that solved my problems.

these two are unrelated to font feature so that won't happen .. the 
whole idea is to *not* scale the font and delay that

when you enable compact fonts we you actually use these fontspecs (a 
font spec is internally comparable to a so called glue spec which is why 
it's called that way: internally stored in some wierd kind of node .. 
maybe \fontscalespec is better so i might change it when i can't think 
of anything to add to it -- i'm still considering adding some of the 
other realtime glyph properties)


i suppose that at some point we can add a more high level command (or 
integrate it better in style definitions which all depends on usage 
patterns

Do you have a example where anything besides \thanks fails. I changed 
\thanks to another commands in the example below and there was no 
problem to do so. The only thing you *have* to do when you change the 
command is to remove the auxiliary file (context --purge) because the 
old (non existing) command is otherwise used in the next run which 
results then in an error message.

Hi Kausika,

Your workaround seems to help, though it entails adding the ZWS
throughout. Anyway, I agree with you in that even with this anomaly,
Context is worth sticking to.

Try with the following:

\definefallbackfamily
  [malayalam]
  [serif]
  [TeX Gyre Pagella][range=controlpictures,force=yes]
\definefontfamily
  [malayalam]
  [serif]
  [RIT Rachana][features=malayalam-two]

\setupbodyfont[malayalam]


I have tested that this works on my system. Ensure that the TeX Gyre Pagella 
font is available on your system (ConTeXt ships with a copy of this font). If 
it still does not work check the log file for any messages regarding fallback 
font.

This is what I tried -

\setupbodyfont [mainfont]

\starttext

\title{മലയാളലിപികളുടെ ആവൃത്തി നിർണ്ണയം}

\stoptext

This doesn't print the open box. If I remove the definefontfamily
command or define font family using only Latin Modern, open box is
printed, but not the title.

What am I missing?
