Otared points out that the distinction between \triangle and
\bigtriangleup comes from plain TeX. plain.tex has these definitions:

\mathchardef\triangle=0234
\mathchardef\bigtriangleup=2234

So \triangle is a math ord and \bigtriangleup a math bin.

For compatibility, that should probably stay true in ConTeXt too---even
the low placement of \bigtriangledown, which I don't understand but
which does reproduce plain TeX's placement.

why? if compatibility means 'not useable' we should fix it

Btw, it is still on my agenda to provide a mechanism for switching
between math dictionaries (i.e. group symbols in group switch if needed
different properties) so that one can switch between logic,
statistics, streetfighting or whatever math.

Hm, like different dialects of a language. Plain TeX definitely speaks
a pure-mathematician dialect. It would be interesting to see what
symbol groups are useful in other dialects.

http://www.openmath.org/cdindex.html

it would be interesting to come up with a reasonable list of math languages

An index is bound to something, in most cases the next node (often a

  text

Where do you expect a page break? And how robust can that be

The simplification of \quote and \quotation should not be hardcoded, but

this kind of things are always tricky ... simplify vs ignore and so

there is an experimental option:

i've made that one also ignore notes (beta coming)

concerning the undefined commands (\command) ... ad \let\command\relax

I have postet a minexample already here:

http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2014/077590.html

There is a link to the used font, too. If you have problem to see the
unicode (like in my mailer), then you can copy the symbol from pure html
here:

http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/attachments/20140402/d24030dc/attachment.html

You can see the outout, like it should be (screenshot from other
programms outputs) here:

http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/attachments/20140402/d24030dc/attachment.png

It is a very small and clear minexample in my view :)

I do not know, if the font is valid, surely it may have some problems.
But in this case other programs I tried (namely CorelDraw and MS Word)
do not have any problems with this unicode-symbol. Help and fix would be
great, as this symbol is the only one left in my list of hacks and
workarounds to typeset the quran with ConTeXt. (Hacks etc. needed,
because unfortunately there are no good arabic font, either free or
commercial, which can be used for the massive needs of typesetting quran
(thats why nearly all used qurans are still written by hand)).

But if I can make it clearer, I will definitely try, because it is an
important question for typessting quran with ConTeXt.

Thanks!
Huseyin

[NTG-context] Problem with pdf output for FeedARead.com

2014-04-15 Thread Keith McKay

Colleagues

A friend of mine asked me to produce a small book of three of her short
stories for FeedARead.com from a word document. On looking at the site
I suggested I do a conversion to pdf since it would look much better and
FeedARead recommend uploading pdf over word as well. So I set about
using Context to produce a simple pdf for upload using the structure below:

\definepapersize[leela][width=5in, height=8in]

\setuppapersize[leela][leela]

\setuplayout[backspace=0.75in,cutspace=0.5in,width=fit]

\setupindenting[yes,medium,next]

\setuppagenumbering[state=stop]

\setupexternalfigures[location={local,default}]

\setupalign[nonhyphenated]

\setuphead[section-3][number=no,align=middle][alternative=doublesided,location=footer]

\setuptolerance[vertical,verystrict]

\setuptolerance[horizontal,verytolerant]

\starttext

\midaligned{\tfd{Title Page}}

\page

FeedAReed blurb and copyright notice goes here.

\setupcombinedlist[content][list={chapter,section,subsection}]

\completecontent

\page[empty]

\setuppagenumbering[state=start,alternative=doublesided,location=footer]

\startsection[title={Knuth}]

\input knuth\par

\stopsection

\page

\startsection[title={Zapf}]

\input zapf\par

\stopsection

\page

\startsection[title={Tufte}]

\input tufte\par

\stopsection

\stoptext

As you can see it's nothing fancy but is produces nice copy. However,
when my friend uploaded to FeedARead she received back this comment:

/Please note that you have uploaded TWO pages of your book per one 5
inch wide x 8 inch high page e.g. on your file there would be two book
pages of print per page and not one per page as required./

I did notice that when viewed in Adobe Reader, V11.0.6, it displays two
pages on the screen at a time but on checking the documents properties
it shows the correct page size so I thought it was OK. I've had a look
on the wiki but haven't found anything obviously wrong in what I've done
above. Is their something I'm missing in \definepapersize or
\setuppapersize? I really don't want to have to tell her to upload the
word doc.

Thanks and Best Wishes
Keith

The most used Soviet typeface is Literaturnaya. You can find it here

There is also a free digital version available. (I think you can find
it on the CTAN). But all digital versions I know of are not really
well-suited for body text (they are quite thin, obviously based on a
display size of the original typeface).

A derived typeface which is a bit better for text is Quant Antiqua:

http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/paratype/quant-antiqua/

While Literaturnaya/Quant are surely the best matches for Soviet
typography in general, they may not be the best match for Soviet
modernism. Maybe Baltica could fit better:

Generally, I suggest to search through the ParaType offerings. They
have many nice typefaces, which are not expensive.

  The new font they advertise on their home page, Journal Sans New,

[NTG-context] Insert text at end of every paragraph

Dear list,

I've tried it like that:

\define \par {Endstring\endgraf}

\chapter {Chapter}
\section {Section}
\input knuth
\input zapf
\stoptext

This works, but it results in a lot of additional strings. The string
Endstring should appear on paragraph ends only (it's acceptable to

How can I achieve the desired result?

Is there maybe something like \EveryPar for the end of paragraphs?

example from the wiki:
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/defineMPinstance

\defineMPinstance
  [important]
  [metafun] % needs to be inherited from the global metafun instance
  [textcolor=red]

\defineMPinstance
  [veryimportant]
  [important]
  [textstyle=bold]

\starttext

% normal black text
\startMPcode
  draw textext(some text) ;
\stopMPcode

% red text
\startMPcode{important}
  draw textext(some text) ;
\stopMPcode

% red bold text
\startMPcode{veryimportant}
  draw textext(some text) ;
\stopMPcode

% a graphic that uses a custom instance
% This does not work with the current stable version
\startuseMPgraphic{veryimportant::mygraphic}
  draw textext(some text) ;
\stopuseMPgraphic

\useMPgraphic{veryimportant::mygraphic}

\stoptext

Thanks,
Aditya

Re: [NTG-context] pagecolormodel problem

 can someone confirm, that this code fails with a recent ConTeXt version?

It fails for me with 2014.03.27 (luatex 0.78.2).

Re: [NTG-context] OT: looking for a soviet font

2014-04-15 Thread Henning Hraban Ramm

 The most used Soviet typeface is Literaturnaya. You can find it here
 for example:

 http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/paratype/literaturnaya/

 There is also a free digital version available. (I think you can find
 it on the CTAN). But all digital versions I know of are not really
 well-suited for body text (they are quite thin, obviously based on a
 display size of the original typeface).

 A derived typeface which is a bit better for text is Quant Antiqua:

 http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/paratype/quant-antiqua/

 While Literaturnaya/Quant are surely the best matches for Soviet
 typography in general, they may not be the best match for Soviet
 modernism. Maybe Baltica could fit better:

 http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/paratype/baltica/

 Generally, I suggest to search through the ParaType offerings. They
 have many nice typefaces, which are not expensive.

Thank you very much!

On TeX-D-L Ulrich Dirr suggested Academy, Baltica, Literaturnaya, Journal/Sans
or Ladoga, all from Paratype.

Unfortunately Ladoga and Quant lack the Kyrgyz and Kasakh glyphs that I need.
(They have special characters for „German umlaut sounds“ ü and ö, as well as
ng).

I don’t think Baltica is very legible, even if it fits the style.
Literaturnaya seems a bit too light, but as „favourite text face of Soviet
typography“ it surely fits the bill.

I’ll probably go for Journal+Sans, but I didn’t scan the whole Paratype library
yet.

[NTG-context] remove full stop after a title ending with punctuation

2014-04-15 Thread Peng Zhang

Dear List,

If an article is How about this?, in the bib list, it will be printed like

author1, author2, ..., How about this?. Journal name...

I am trying to remove . after ?

From reading documents, I think I should change (bibl-apa)
\insertarttitle{\bgroup }{\egroup. }{}%

Right now it will add . in all cases. Is it possible that I can change
it to conditional statement.

Something like if the original title ends with punctuation, do nothing,
otherwise, add ..

Hope that I made myself clear.

Thank you!

Best,
Peng

That’s wrong - I looked only at the preview picture at Paratype’s. Myfonts
shows the whole impressing glyph range:
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/paratype/ladoga/

Even if it doesn’t exactly fit my project I guess I „must“ buy it ;-)

Quant Antiqua also has the needed glyphs.
