Thank you both, Wolfgang and Hans for helping me be able to use user specified
footnote bulltes.
I am using it in a table which I encapsulate with localfootnotes. I call
\setupnotation[footnote][numberconversion=fnsym] % change footnote symbols
after the startlocal, and it works in the table
found
\startlocal (\startlokaal) in the ConTeXt getting started pdf, but Mk IV does
not know \startlocal (any more?).
My example:
% setup the page format
\definepapersize[wissenschaft][width=170mm,height=240mm]
% use the new page format
\setuppapersize[wissenschaft]
% shape the page
\setuplayout

\defineparagraphs and \setupparagraphs and it almost works. But for
doublesided documents the text on verso pages is incorrectly aligned. I
tried [location=inner], but the macros do not seem to be aware of that. I
also found \startlocal (\startlokaal) in the ConTeXt getting started

Hi Steffen,
this works, but the \startlocal...\stoplocal combination is not used
very often in 'the source' (so there must be a better way).

But I can't figure out how to get it to do verticle centring.

I'v tested your solution and it worked, but I had problems trying to get

Hello Peter,
\start ... \stop mark the boundaries of the local (layout) setup, which
is defined between \startlocal ... \stoplocal. This way you don't need
to redefine your old layout after a local (one page) style change.
ConTeXt returns to the prior layout automatically.
So deleting them

a single page ?
