Perl may not be the most enjoyable language around, but it's not like he
has to actually learn it to effectively use MRTG.
MRTG is already built and just needs to be pointed at his assets. No need
to pull in another language that might not be known or heavily used to
reinvent a working wheel...

Not sure if you're looking for something specific, but around 2000 or 2002 I
used the MRTG for Dummies documents for a kickstart.

Also I seem to remember something called PRTG that did about the same thing
