[META] S/N ratio

The signal-to-noise ratio on this list has plummeted over the past few days. Human nature being what it is, some noise is unavoidable -- even beneficial -- but this is getting ridiculous. May I please ask that people exercise some self-restraint when posting? If a side discussion beckons,
