There was a good showing of summer seabirds at Shinnecock Inlet from 5-6 p.m.
today. Conservative estimates are 12 Greater Shearwaters, 12 Cory's
Shearwaters, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, and 8 Wilson's Storm-petrels. The birds were
lolling around, making estimates difficult. Several shearwaters
The Cupsogue Beach, Westhampton Dunes, Hudsonian Godwit was seen
today, 4:00-5:00PM, feeding along the closest sand spit, south and
east of the first island east of Moriches Inlet.
The bird was visible from the sandy road near the campground (west of
the parking lot), and from the shoreline,

A. White Pelican is sitting on the beach side of the East Pond @ Jamaica. The
bird is visible from the parking lot at the North Channel Bridge. This bird
was found by NPS ranger Julia Clepsch. Good luck if you go.

looking for the godwit (which we just missed) when we heard thunder and saw a
flash of lightning. We didn't wait, but left immediately for the sanctity of

after being struck by lightning yesterday afternoon and their injuries
were not life threatining.
