Subject: (Metro Birding Briefs) gray-hooded gull update.
A few days ago there was a post about the back field at Stillwell Woods
Preserve. Huntington Oyster Bay Audubon had requested that the county refrain
from mowing the field until sometime in the late fall in order to preserve the
habitat for birds, butterflies and other insects. We are meeting
Late afternoon low tide birds at Pikes Beach out front of the viewing
stand- 1 Marbled Godwit, 40 Royal Terns.Down the road at Cupsogue mudflats
Dick Belanger and I had 9 Royal Terns, 3 Black Terns, and a Clapper Rail.
We also found good numbers of Short billed Dowitchers, Ruddy Turnstones,

lot. They had just returned from a successful Gull sighting at Coney Island.

picked out a sleeping bird on the
The Hudsonian Godwit was present today, Aug.2. The bird was seen, scope
view, from the end of the path that passes by Big Johns Pond. The bird was
mixed in with Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and many ducks. The view was not
easy and many thanks goes to Ken Thompson who stayed with the
