As I left the Setauket mill pond this afternoon, I met a bird photographer,
Grace Scalzo, who said she had taken photos of the Black-headed gull in
flight. She kindly sent me two fine photos, with gracious permission to
post them.

The Rufous Hummingbird continues at the Beverly Smith Butterfly garden at
Lenoir Nature Preserve in Yonkers, Westchester County. It now has been present
each day since last Sunday. It may stick around for a while. Here are the first

The bird roosted almost motionless in the center of the pond for the better
part of a half hour. I managed a few lousy spread-winged shots.

season - an adult, seen from the Adam Beck overlook (Ontario) at the power
plants. Also here were a first winter THAYER'S GULL, an adult ICELAND GULL,

The Dickcissel was still present at the Boat Basin parking lot this afternoon
through 2:30pm, foraging in the bushes just past the restrooms with a flock of
House Sparrows. Further down, there were no shorebirds present on the spit,
although I heard a report of good numbers of Dunlin,

This looks like a good Black-headed Gull to me. The face pattern and
wingtips look to be ok for that species without any hybrid influence.
Maybe flight photos would demonstrate this for sure.

bird we photographed in 2002 in Woodburne, NY. Take a look at that bird at
