Yesterday at Robert Moses SP I observed about 5 or 6 Sooty Shearwaters along
with some good looks at two light color form Parasitic Jaegers that were
pursuing terns out over the ocean. Things got a bit more interesting when my
friend said what is that dark bird in the water close to shore.
I arrived in Sterling Forest this morning about 9AM, after reading an early
posting by Karen Fung about the Mississippi Kite(s). Karen was still there and
the Kite had been around for a while but at that time it was gone. I spent the
entire day over there and I saw many birds (Indigo, Golden
First about the Sterling Forest / Orange Co. Mississippi Kite, it
might be added to the reports on this list that Aimee Labarr, and Maha
Katnani, both of Dutchess County NY, played a good role in the initial
(first) find of the kite... the first identification and then the
report
There were two adult-like Arctic Terns at Cupsogue today. The first was found
by Michael McBrien (and re-found by a party including Michael, Tom Burke, Gail
Benson, Andrew Baksh, and Heydi Lopes, after a panic caused by a Parasitic
Jaeger over the bay, about which more below); the second made a
Saw a Black-Billed Cuckoo, briefly, on the east side of the Upper Lobe
early this afternoon.

The 2 Mississippi Kites continued at Sterling Forest SP visitor's center at
3:00 PM this afternoon. The lovely birds flew around and around for about 5-10
minutes giving all present a great show. Hopefully they will remain and breed.

We stopped by HLSP this morning in hopes of seeing a Mourning Warbler (there
had been one reported at HLSP on Saturday from the South Pond area) with no
luck. However, we did observe a calling Acadian Flycatcher along the stream
opposite the restrooms. Eastern Wood Pewees were present in fair
A 3-hour (7:30-10:30) round trip hike out to Democrat Point from
Robert Moses Field 2 was eventually well worth the effort.
After seeing very little activity over the ocean (a scattering of

Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons and Save the Animals Rescue
Foundation first.
