Seeing David's report of Red-headed Woodpeckers on Squaw Island, I had to
take a little detour on my way to Wegman's this evening. I did see the
following in the few minutes I was there:
Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) 17
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) 5
Red-headed Woodpecker
I observed the Ruff through 7:00 p.m. on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge this evening. It was quite active moving a lot during my
brief observation flying from the east side to the west side on the North
End and even headed towards the South End and back and last seen feeding on
the

Thanks for the email, it would be great if you could get a chance to see it,
or even photograph it.
So I looked on Google maps, since I am not that familiar with the area and I
talked to my friend who was with me to try to pinpoint where we saw
Arrived at about 11:00 to two birders walking out of the East Pond NW corner
reporting no Ruff. I proceeded to the Pond hoping it will still be around.
First scan turned up nothing. 10 minutes later a group of 120 or so Dowitchers
came in. Scanned again and I spotted the Ruff just south of

I also saw the Ruff at exactly the same spot as described by JT in an
earlier post from today. Scanning a broad area from the spit closest to the
island along with a fellow birder from out of town (with much experience with
this species), we found the Ruff after close to 2 hours - which was

Looking at one of the Ruff right now from a spit just south of the North Island
on the north end of the East Pond. Entered via the northwest corner and worked
our way just a few hundred yards down and there he was, right across the water.
