Many people did NOT see the Virginia's Warbler, despite quite a bit of
searching between 8:45am and 4pm.
As a few did see it today, its likely still there, but is really, really tough
to find.

Hecksher SP, 3 Short-billed Dowitchers flew over our heads calling repeatedly.

Today about 2:30 PM myself and seven other folks from the Brooklyn
Bird Club found a Lark Sparrow at Caumsett State Park in Suffolk
County. The bird was with a large Junco flock near the Northwest
corner of the outlying stable and
corral area (40.919727, -73.462257).
We did not locate either of th
The Saturday morning walk started with the sighting of a Barred Owl flying out
of a roost, Blue Jays in hot pursuit. While trying to relocate the owl we were
alerted to the sounds of Red Crossbills in the pine area near the main entrance
of the garden. Last week, we spotted White winged Crossbil
Luckily we finally got a good look - briefly - at the V-bird within
walking distance of our apt.

Just west of the Kettle toward 76th Ave, headed into the brushy area
between Nutmeg Meadow and 76th.

11/17/12 - Charlotte Demers (the person with the Harris's Sparrow in her
yard) just emailed to say a Pine Grosbeak just showed up outside her Newcomb
house! (She also has Bohemian Waxwings and Evening Grosbeaks.)
Yesterday, 11/16/12, I found 2 Pine Grosbeaks while driving to the Long Lake
Post
Around 8:00 this morning Betsy and I were separated in the yard but both of
us identified the call of a PINE GROSBEAK - "peew peew peew", or something
like that. We came together in the area the call was coming from and I
finally spotted the bird but, of course, it chose that moment to fly before
Flock of 7 reds just west of coastguard lot. Also 2 white wings

Charlotte Demers just emailed a photo of a Harris's Sparrow at her feeders
in Newcomb. It is a first winter bird. She doesn't know how long it has
been around since she has been gone all week. The bird was discovered as
she was doing Project Feederwatch t
Among the 34 species I found this morning at Smith Point County Park in
Suffolk County were both crossbills - a flock of 9 White-wings and a single
cooperative female Red. Also fun for me were 36 Boat-tailed Grackles, 15
Northern Gannets, 2 Fox Sparrows, and 26 Savannah Sparrows.

Moments after reading Seth's timely post I looked up to see 3 CAVE SWALLOWS
drifting over me at Camp Hero. They were heading into the wind towards the
Montauk Lighthouse area. Heading down there now to see if I can relocate.

The RED CROSSBILLS reported here yesterday by Ken Fuestel and David La Magna
earlier this morning were still present when I was there (7:45-9:30), in
numbers at least as large and perhaps significantly greater than Ken noted.
Airborne flock(s) containing as many as 35-40 birds were seen, and flocks
Mike Scheibel and have at least 60 Red Crossbills near the model airplane field
at Hecksher.
There are also good numbers of White-winged at least in the 20 range.

All previous lapwing spots checked this morning with no success. Only other
birds of note so far are the continuing White-winged Crossbills in the pines
near the IGA supermarket in Montauk Village.
