The Garden's unofficial Christmas Bird Count (11am-2pm) turned up the following
birds on a cloudy Saturday:
Barred Owl-1
Great Horned Owl-2
Red tailed hawk-2
Cooper's Hawk-3
American Crow-4
American Goldfinch-24+
Black capped Chickadee-26+
House Finch-35+
Tufted Titmice-7
European Starling-285
During a bird walk at the Setauket Mill Pond today at 11am, we discovered a
winter-plumage BLACK-HEADED GULL swimming, and foraging around the mudflats of
the inlet north of main pond around low tide. For a brief period he flew around
showing his bright reddish orange legs and feet off.

My wife Betsy and I had a Snowy Owl on Hick's Island Napeague visible from
the boat launch at Napeague. Also present was a Lesser Black-backed Gull
(Larry). At nearby Hither Hills State Park was a mixed flock of 30 Red and
White-winged

Has anyone noticed anomalies in the new AOU checklist online at
http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/? I would appreciate any light anyone can shed
on what is going on. Changes seem to have been made to the online checklist
for which I have seen no corresponding direction in the published
supplements
The Barnacle Goose continues on the Parade Grounds at Van Cortlandt
Park. On the north end of the field with a huge flock of Canada's.
No Cackling seen in this flock despite several sweeps.
