continuing the theme, Sunday, 1st of March 2015 - at the East River off Manhattan's (N.Y. City) east shoreline & a few hundred yards south of the R.F.K. (Triboro) bridge, was a Red-necked Grebe (in transitional plumage) not too far off the shoreline, seen feeding. That area also held a

I ended up spending most of the day birding Coastal Queens again--though not by design. Today's coastal birding, was brought on by an effort to aid an injured Harbor Seal that was observed yesterday on the beach at Jacob Riis Park. In the end with a little encouragement the Seal made its way back

On Saturday Sue and I had seven Red-necked Grebes at Montauk Pt. and three at Shinnecock Inlet. Besides a female King Eider at the Point there was little else but waterfowl. Passerines, with the exception of American Robin, were largely missing. Also notably missing were blackbirds (we had one

It seems like there has been a sizeable movement of Red-necked Grebes into Long Island waters over the past couple of days. This morning, before the snow made viewing impossible, Tim Dunn and I watched 16 Red-necked Grebes fly west past Robert Moses field 2 (in a 45 minute period late morning),

At Baisley Pond Park in Queens this morning, a Red-necked Grebe and 52 Redheads. This is shortly north of Belt Parkway on Rockaway Blvd. The adult Red-shouldered Hawk was behind the visitors' center at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The Wilson's Snipe was at the east side of Gerritson Creek

In between watching grandson #3's basketball game, and grandson #4's investiture into the Men's/Boy's Choir at St.Agnes Cathedral (both in RVC) I had a couple of hours to get down to Jones Beach and try to see some birds ! Heading south on Meadow brook Parkway, I counted 2 Red-tail Hawks. At the

A cooperative Common Redpoll continues today near lamp post 249 in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. The bird was observed feeding on a small birch tree just behind the wire fencing to the right of the picnic tables. Bird was originally found by Rafael Campos Friday morning and refound 10:30 AM today

Yesterday I led a daylong trip for NYC Audubon to Floyd Bennett Field, Fort Tilden, and nearby locales. The Rough-legs at FBF put on a great show.  Just like Steve Walter, we only saw 2 at any given time, but identified them as 3 individuals by plumage.  They were hovering, perching on the
