There were ~275 Purple Martins (PUMA) on one of the runways at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn this morning. Previous high count on eBird in Kings County is 11 and in NYC it's 50 (Staten Island). I had never seen more than 2 in Brooklyn personally. https://ebird.org/atlasny/checklist/S72967701

I've always been impressed and puzzled by the remarkable number of nighthawks recorded in early fall year from the Setauket Mill Pond area. Nowhere else on Long Island has numbers anywhere close to this. In fact, single-digit counts are the norm elsewhere except perhaps a few spots that are also

Today. Sat 8/29 at about 4:30 Adult. Small sparrow with chestnut-colored earpatch and black malar, curving up toward shoulder. White stripe between earpatch and malar stripe. Clean white throat and breast with single black central spot. Chestnut stripe above white eye stripe. Light-colored

Just wanted to post a quick update. The bird seems to have hung around until approximately 11:15, shortly before I arrived with my younger daughter. A birder who was present informed me that it was observed flying over the dunes and towards the ocean. We didn’t spot the Red-necked Phalarope

The Nighthawk Watch is actually in Setauket near Stony Brook. Directions: Long Island Expressway to Nicolls Road (Exit 62). Take Nicolls Road north to the end where it joins State Route 25A. Make a right heading east on 25A. Make left at first light onto Main Street. Take this north to end

We had a banner evening with 351 nighthawks passing by the watch, making it the 2nd highest daily total we've ever recorded. We had a kettle of about 130 birds circling above us at one point. Many swallows and swifts and even some laughing gulls were feeding on the insect swarms above us.

We had a banner evening with 351 nighthawks passing by the watch, making it the 2nd highest daily total we've ever recorded. We had a kettle of about 130 birds circling above us at one point. Many swallows and swifts and even some laughing gulls were feeding on the insect swarms above us.
