There's been a continuing immature Northern Goshawk in the western part of
Massapequa Preserve - I've seen it 4 times in the last 2 weeks. (I live a
block away from the Preserve) From what I know it has been seen in the
Preserve as far north as the Walker Street parking lot and as far south as

I stopped at Massapequa Preserve to check out the previously reported
possible hybrid Ross/ Snow Goose. I don't see anything indicating a hybrid
- looks like a Snow Goose to me - in any event it was very vocal with the
Canada Geese - it was at the Pittsburgh Ave Pond and the stream

The weather says winter, but the birds said spring. Pulling into the Walker
Street parking lot the first bird to greet me was an Eastern Phoebe.

With the high winds forecasted for today we decided to stay away from the beach
and head inland to Massapequa Preserve (MP). We missed most the birds found on
the Southern Nassau CBC at MP, but found a few goodies. A lone Common Raven was

sunset - the pond parrellel to Doris Place was full with Common Grackles
and Red-winged Blackbirds in the reeds. The noise was deafening (mostly

Long story short, I searched the Preserve for 12 hours from Southern State
Parkway to Merrick Road and continued south to the bay finding 59 species.

This morning I saw a Black-billed Cuckoo in Massapequa Preserve, about 1/4 mile
north of Pittsburg Ave on the dirt path running n-s on the west side of the
preserve. It caught and ate 1 or 2 caterpillars, so did not appear to be

good for a winter's day of birding. There were some early arrivals,
like a pair of ospreys, a pair of great egrets, a hermit thrush and

Massapequa Preserve continues to be a good location for lingering
warblers this fall, with a late immature Yellow Warbler seen this
morning. In the past few weeks warblers at MP have included Orange-
crowned, Black-throated Blue, Parula, and Palm. Last Sunday a late

Around noon I had a bright Orange-crowned Warbler along the stream about 100
yards or so north of the Pittsburg Avenue pond.
