Chris Wiley, Alberto Lopez, Carolyn Sedgwick, and I saw the bird perched behind the house at 494 Prospect St. in Champlain. Two Northern Shrikes and two Ruffed Grouse were also along Prospect St. Searching through my email inbox, I do not think this bird was reported to the state listserv even though it is a state rarity and has been present for several weeks (reported 20 January 2010 by Donna Gooley) - even on the local listserv (http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NNYB.html), there were no updates on the hawk owl since 6 February. It might be helpful if local birders or visitors could continue to monitor and update on the presence/ absence of the owl - if not to help traveling birders, it is at the very least interesting and important to note the entire date range of such a rare bird's stay. We saw another long-staying Northern Hawk Owl a bit west of Montreal earlier in the day (<1 hr NW of Champlain, NY).
