On June 5th I had a prolonged sighting of a male pileated woodpecker at the
NSLA's Humes Preserve in Mill Neck while standing at the top of the stairs
that lead down into the meadow. The bird flew from right to left across the
length of the meadow and started to both vocalize and rap on a dead
During the past week I’ve been hearing third-hand reports of a Pileated
Woodpecker in Forest Park, Queens. At 7:30 this morning, I heard one, then saw
it a couple minutes later in the vicinity of the waterhole.

We were fortunate to see the Pileated Woodpecker at Shu Swamp Preserve
(Mill Neck, Long Island) this afternoon around 1:00. We followed the trail
to the south (off the parking lot) which runs parallel to Frost Mill Rd.

This morning I had a Pileated Woodpecker flying fairly high across Central Park
Ave. from the Barnes and Noble side to the opposite side and land in a dead
tree. A first for that area. Kind of an unusual place to see them. Good to
know they're around there.

As i was birding the south zone of pehlam bay park and stopped to photo
some pine warblers heavy drumming caught my attention.A pileated woodpecker was

FYI, the dead end of Mount Misery Road is completely on the other side of West
Hills County Park from Reservoir Road and Jayne's Hill (opposite sides of Sweet
Hollow Rd., which bisects the park). So, not a good idea to access the park

There are Pileated Woodpecker records from The Bronx, Manhattan, and
Queens: two from VanCortlandt Park (one photographed), one from
Inwood Hill Park (also photographed), and one from Forest Park. I saw
the photos of one of the VanCortlandt birds and the one from Inwood.
