[nysbirds-l] Suffolk geese

2015-02-10 Thread Douglas Futuyma
At Belmont Lake State Park, three of the previously reported Greater
White-fronted Geese were close to the wooded northwest border of the lake,
at about 8:30. They and the Canada Geese were not moving much, and
probably many Canadas, perhaps with other companions, were out of sight,
further back in the wooded corner. I also saw 3 Common Mergansers.

At 4:30 this afternoon, along Doctor's Path, east of Riverhead, a search
among grazing geese was rewarded only with a single Cackling Goose.

[nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing, Longspurs, Buntings, Larks - Lake Ontario Plain, Niagara County

2015-02-10 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Around 10-10:30 this morning, the BOHEMIAN WAXWING at Fort Niagara State
Park was showing well, along with about 30 Cedars, 4 Robins, and 4 PURPLE
FINCHES. They were in the heavily laden fruit trees near the north entrance
booths (the Parkway entrance).

Near the south end of Hulbert Road in the Town of Wilson, there was a huge
flock of 550 SNOW BUNTINGS, 150 HORNED LARKS, and 9 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. The
birds were usually far back in the field on the east side of the road and
would often fly around the covered manure piles. They were not looking for
openings to get at the manure but were landing on and below the weed stalks
that were sticking above the snow - very redpoll like. I even saw a Tree
Sparrow mixed in with them. They would also land in the fields but appeared
to be just resting there, some with only their heads showing above the snow.
Occasionally, they would come to the road as well. Except when they came to
the road, a scope was necessary to pick out the longspurs.

Good birding!

I just spoke with Jeff Nadler who has spoken with the home owner. The owl was

There are way too many places for it to hide and with deep snow, the searching

searching in the next day or so. One potential spot is the McGregor Golf

If anything changes, I'll be sure to pass it along.

A report was made this weekend February 7, (with photographs) of a BOREAL OWL
in a backyard (sitting on a feeder!) in Gansevoort, Saratoga County.
The person who made the e-bird report was not the home owners. There are
efforts being made on multiple fronts to get more details on this bird to see
a) if the bird is still present and b) if the owners are willing to have
visitors.
I know a lot of people are interested in this bird (I'm one of them!), but lets
please be patient as we try and get the OK for people to chase.
This is perhaps the 2nd Region 8 record and the 2nd Saratoga County record, the
last being also about this time in February in the late 1970's!

There has been a ~4 year old bald eagle hanging around artists lake (middle

Does anyone know who may have tagged a bald eagle that would be around here?

[nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing, Longspurs, Buntings, Larks - Lake Ontario Plain, Niagara County

2015-02-10 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Around 10-10:30 this morning, the BOHEMIAN WAXWING at Fort Niagara State

Near the south end of Hulbert Road in the Town of Wilson, there was a huge
flock of 550 SNOW BUNTINGS, 150 HORNED LARKS, and 9 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. The
birds were usually far back in the field on the east side of the road and
