[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Park - Nassau County (4/2)

Did a real quick stop by the Pittsburgh Ave. entrance of Massapequa Park
and something immediately caught my eye when walking in.  It was flying
erratically and as it got closer I was able to ID it as a bat!  This was
about 2:00pm so I was surprised (worried) to see it flying around during
the middle of a sunny day.  Continued to watch the bat fly back and forth
for about 10 minutes.  I noticed that it seemed to actually be feeding.  I
was able to get a couple blurry shots if anyone is interested.  I know it
is not a bird but it does have wings!

Nothing out of the ordinary spotted: osprey, great blue heron, continuing 2
male and female wood ducks.  Unfortunately I saw three different groups
throwing bread into the water and feeding the ducks/swans, this seems to be
an increasing problem.

  Highlights of reports received March 26 through April 2 from
  the Niagara Frontier Region.

  In Chautauqua County, March 29 - EURASIAN WIGEON at the
  Berry Road marsh, outside Fredonia. Also the 29th, a GR.
  WHITE-FR. GOOSE in Niagara County, at Hess Road, north of
  Bishop Road in Newfane, and at least 10 CACKLING GEESE, at
  Route 18 and Niagara-Orleans Countyline Road. March 28, a
  juvenile GOLDEN EAGLE over the New York State Thruway at
  Alden. On the 30th, two SANDHILL CRANES at Route 77 and
  Casey Road in the Iroquois Refuge. And, EARED GREBE at the
  Batavia Waste Water Plant on April 2.

  Varying flocks of SNOW GEESE roaming the Lake Ontario Plains
  this week. 1500 SNOW GEESE in Medina north of the Erie
  Canal. 2500 SNOW GEESE on Griswold Road north of Route 77 in
  Royalton. At Lake Ontario, over 500 SNOW GEESE passing Point
  Breeze at Oak Orchard Creek. Just east of the region, March
  28, 10,000 SNOW GEESE on Byron Road, northeast of Batavia.

  On the March 29 BOS field trip, two, distant flocks of
  several thousand SNOW GEESE over Lake Ontario. Other trip
  highlights - RED-NECKED GREBES and HORNED GREBES off the
  lakeshore state parks, two CACKLING GEESE at Johnson Creek Road
  in the Town of Hartland. Also on the field trip, migrant
  RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS and a dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and
  an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL in roost hole.

  A pair of PURPLE MARTINS arrived March 31 at a nest box in
  the Chautauqua County Town of Sheridan. More, widespread
  TREE SWALLOWS. EASTERN MEADOWLARKS from the Southern Tier to
  the Lake Ontario Plains. Many SONG SPARROW reports and a
  single CHIPPING SPARROW in Bethany.

  GREAT EGRETS arrived around Grand Island and at the Berry
  Road marsh this week.

  Other reports this week - opening waters of the Iroquois
  Refuge and Batavia Waste Water Plant added PIED-BILLED
  GREBE, AMERICAN COOT, NORTHERN SHOVELER and BLUE-WINGED
  TEAL. Also 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS at the Batavia Waste Water
  Plant. 140 TUNDRA SWANS and a NORTHERN SHRIKE at Kumpf marsh
  in the Iroquois Refuge. On the Buffalo waterfront, 4 RED-
  THROATED LOONS still off LaSalle Park, with HORNED GREBE and
  WHITE-WINGED SCOTER. COMMON LOON noted on Lake Ontario at
  the Wilson Pier. And, BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERONS at Dunkirk
  Harbor.

  The April BOS meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 8, at

[nysbirds-l] Valley Stream Yellow-throated Warbler

As of about 12:30PM or so, the bird has not been seen. A search by many  
birders failed to come up with the bird at its previous described locations as 
 well as other suitable habitat within the park. A.J. Henrickson Park (to 
the  south) was also searched. The last known appearance today was at about 
8:30 AM  where the two streams meet at the south end, and in that immediate 
vicinity.

[nysbirds-l] Common Teal @ Brookville Park Queens Co.

There is a Common Teal (Eurasian) @ Brookville Park Queens Co. Same area as
the one I reported on February 18th.

I wonder if this is the same bird because amongst the American Green-winged
Teal is one that show  traits of an intergrade, Common X American. The same
conundrum I was faced with one such candidate back on the 18th.

If it is the same bird from the 18th, I wonder where this Common Teal was
all this time. Staten Island is the only other area locally to report one
as far as I know.

[nysbirds-l] East End sightings

Hoping for another glimpse of the snowy owl that was still present near Lazy 
Point last weekend, I found a FOS Eastern Willet instead. Time to move on from 
wintering birds apparently! Other weekend highlights were at least four very 
active male woodcocks at Poxabogue park last Sunday evening, and continuing 
snipes, killdeer, great egrets, a few lingering Bonaparte's gulls and a flock 
of 30 or so green winged teal on Georgica Cove. Osprey are also active over 
Georgica.
