July 8 -- Western New York - In Tonawanda I had one adult Osprey and
three young Ospreys at the nest that can be seen from River Road at Tonawanda
Asphalt. At Motor Island as seen from the Sheridan Drive Boat Launch (ask
permission before parking) there were 51 Great Egrets, still 31 Great

I had some good quality time in the field today with some nice results.
These are the highlights from multiple stops within 3 locations:
Jones Beach West End: On the Sandbar were 2 Gull-billed Terns (Perhaps the
same 2 that were recently harassing the Terns over at Nickerson Beach) and

I birded Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on two different tide cycles to look
for any shorebird movement and also to assess the water level on the East
Pond.
Shorebirds are definitely on their way as evidenced by the numbers of
Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and Short-billed Dowitchers. Additional
The Hooded Crow was seen by me on the wires above the roadway at the corner of
Hylan Blvd and Heinz Avenue next to Andrew's Diner at 12:45pm today, July 8. I
saw it immediately upon pulling up to the diner. It briefly flew over the diner
to the next block, then headed back towards the beach.
The Hooded Crow was present today at it's "usual" haunts in Great Kills -
Crooke's Point and east down the beach (minimally 6:00 - 6:30 a.m.). It was
relatively unharrased by Northern Mockingbirds.

When Joe Giunta and I were at Crooke's Point in late June, the Hooded Crow,
harassed by a Mockingbird, flew off toward the beach and then across the water
before I lost sight of it in the distance. Using "Google Earth" and Alan
Michelin's report of yesterday, I now believe it was headed
