Sue and I evacuated our home Saturday night, staying with friends on the north
shore. Upon returning to our home we found a large tree limb blocking the
driveway that we had to cut up. We did not get out to the beach till after
12:00PM. Nevertheless, we did see a few good species. At Cedar

Carole Berglie managed to get down to the Sea Cliff Beach (North Shore
of Long Island) within 3 feet of the South Polar Skua to take some

My dad and I started our day of birding, at Mecox Bay, where the
northern parts of the bay cross Montauk Highway. Here, we saw two
Sandwich Terns and a Red-necked Phalarope among the gull and tern
roost. From there, we headed to the flooded end of Horsemill Lane.

Pardon the tone of this post if it comes across as brooding or sarcastic,
but I had the misfortune of completely striking out on storm-borne pelagic
waifs today. A lack of hurricane birding savvy, a delayed start to my day
afield (didn't get out until after 1:00), and circumstances beyond my
late this afternoon whilst watching a CORY'S SHEARWATER circling in the middle
of the bay, I spotted a BLACK-CAPPED PETREL circling as well. John Shemilt was
able to locate the bird from the west side. He was joined by Tom Burke, Gail
Benson and Andy Guthrie. Still there a dusk.

After seeing the birds reported by Corey Finger at Jones Inlet, I went to
the fishing dock/marina on Reynolds Channel, west of Loop Parkway, with Bob
Proniewicz. Two *Bridled Terns*, an adult and an immature, were close, and
seen at some length. We also saw about 5 *Wilson's Storm-Petrels*. East
Royal Tern seen from 70th St Pier

I stopped at Squires Pond (east landing road) and there are around 50 terns on
the beach - most appear to be conning but at least 2 black terns and 1 juv
skimmer. There are likely other rarities here but I'm

I birded our neighborhood park on the Hudson River in Sleepy Hollow NY from
about 12:30 - 1:30. A strong west or northwest wind was blowing, 30 - 40 mph.

I just had a call from Doug Futuyma- it was a little difficult to hear, but
it I think he said that they are seeing Bridled Tern and Band-rumped Storm
Petrel at West End. Also a second hand report of Either Sooty or Bridled at
the Rocky Point sod farms at Cooper Ave/ Ridge Rd.
Heading out
In the last 45 minutes Doug Gochfeld, Heydi Lopes and I have had a BRIDLED
TERN, 2 LEACH'S STORM PETRELS, 10-15 WILSON'S STORM PETREL, a GREATER
SHEARWATER, and ~ 115 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE fly by the Veteran's Memorial pier
near the Owl's Head WWTP in Brooklyn NY.

A friend who lives overlooking Sea Cliff Beach called to say she is
looking at a skua that landed on the beach and it's just resting there.
Coordinates I just got from Google Maps 40.850526, -73.651507. She
thinks it's probably a South Polar.

Despite Central Park being closed I spent an hour in the park this morning
from 6:30-7:30. I birded the 72nd Street Lake, Turtle Pond, The Great Lawn
and the Reservoir. I didn't expect much and wasn't disappointed. Visibility
was poor and the only birds seen were 3 Mallards, and
