Today, about 4:30 PM, while driving on the North side of the Eastern
Riverhead Air field, I was surprised to disturb two Ruffed Grouse and a
Turkey
in the heavy grass about 10 feet away from me.
I think that this is only the second time I have seen any Grouse on Long
Island.

Hi all,
I was out every day in May and it seemed to me that while the migration was
not as good as usual, it was not dramatically different either. I did the
one Breeding Bird Survey I have on 9 June and it seemed comparable to most
years. However, I haven't compiled the data yet to compare the
Joan & all,
One reason why you haven't seen much discussion is that things are variable
across the state. You (and others) have noted a lack of Indigo Bunting
reports, yet I point to Joe Giunta's post on this list that Indigo Bunting was
at nearly every stop while birding the Hudson Valley.
South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton has a large colony on
the grounds.

This morning I observed a pair of Lesser Scaup - male and female - in the
Sumpwams Canal, seen from Shore Road just south of Suffolk Marine in Babylon.
Notable primarily due to the time of year, as I don't recall ever seeing this
species on Long Island in mid-June.
Thanks,
Tim Dunn
Babylon,
just wondering if anyone else saw the swallowtail kite hunting at the stateline
lookout from 9:15-10 am Saturday or afterwards as it moved south down the
Hudson. I've put a few photos on my facebook page-
"steve sachs photography" if anyone wants to check them out

NYSbirds-L List
Date: June 15-16, 2013
The NYC Audubon overnight birding trip to Orange (Sterling Forest),
Sullivan (Bashakill, Neversink) and Ulster (Shawangunks NWR) Counties was very
successful with 79 species seen by most members of our 9 person group.
Conditions were good for birding at Sterling,
Last night was my highest Black-billed Cuckoo count since starting regular
recording in late May of this year. A total of 21 vocalizations were heard from
at least 18 different individuals passing over my house in Etna, NY.
I've uploaded a couple of images of the cuckoo chart for all of 2012
