In my earlier post of 7/8, I forgot to include seeing/hearing at least 4
birds at the Hampton Bays Water District's property, located 1 block s/o of
the H.Bays LIRR Station, w/o Ponquogue Ave. A pair of Ravens bred there
last year, and probably, did so again this year.

Despite the efforts of 12+ birders, the Elegant Tern was not found this
afternoon/evening between 1:00-8:15 p.m.
Most of the manpower was concentrated on the Cupsogue flats but there was
additional coverage of Tiana/Pike's Beach, Triton Lane etc. by Hugh McGuinness,
John Gluth, Mike Shanley
Today, between 1030 & 1400, I was on the flats at Cupsogue Co. Pk., being
one of the 5 birders mentioned by Shane Blodgett. The only birds of note
that I saw during those 3 & 1/2 hours were 6 Royal Terns, 2 Black Terns,
and finally getting to see the hybrid calidris sandpiper (dunlin x

The bird was first spotted sleeping on the island near the North End,

pond after waiting for water levels (still high), to drop a bit.
I'll have a more detailed report posted on my blogs with a shorebirds

We should all thank Arie Gilbert for finding the elegant tern on June 27th
at Cupsogue County Park.
All of the later sightings probably would not have happened.

Currently being seen at Cupsogue on the flats next to a Royal Tern for great

A few days ago I made an incorrect post of a breeding plumage Western Sandpiper
at Pike's Beach. I initially struggled with the ID due to the off size and
plumage (especially the Pectoral-like breast markings), but lazily backed into
Western Sandpiper as the likeliest candidate - wrong. I heard
