This seems early, so I thought I'd mention it. I saw an American
Redstart this morning at John's Pond. Also there were a Northern
Waterthrush and a big flock of Glossy Ibis. A ranger pointed out that
the Ibis have been favoring that location since "Sandy".

Mark French and I conducted a hit-n-run seawatch from the Field 2 beach
from 523-849AM. Viewing conditions were quite favorable. Two NORTHERN
GANNETS were in view on occasion. The highlight however was a small group
of 4 MANX SHEARWATER. They were flying in a rather direct manner - west to
east -
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge 4 August
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) birded the north end on a falling tide. There were
several hundred shorebirds, all of which flew off with the arrival of a
Peregrine Falcon making a few runs through the group. When we left only a few
dozen birds remained.
My wife Eileen and I birded Cedar Beach, Southold today around noon. We
did not see the Whimbrels reported earlier by Lee Stocker, but we did see
four Glossy Ibisses in the marsh to the west. We have never before seen
that species at Cedar Beach. We also saw one Willet take off over the
marsh;
We are currently viewing two whimbrels at the marsh west of cedar beach county
park in southold. tide is rising so it might be more productive in the latter
part of the day.
Good luck

Steve Schellenger just called to report a Whimbrel on the spit near
the Coast Guard Station at Jones Beach on Long Island. Good luck if
you try for it and thanks again to Steve for the quick report.
