Today, between 3 & 3:30 PM, I took a quick trip through the Calverton
Grasslands. Although being a bit early in the day for an active Short-eared
Owl, it was overcast enough to give it a try. Results were negative on the

As others have said already, being a high-arctic breeder Snowy Owls really
have no choice but to hunt in daylight because there is little or no night
during the summer. This, I would guess, is what the textbooks are referring
to. The opposite will be true during the winter for the many birds that

instead stay in their resident far northern habitats, many will be required
to feed in virtually uninterrupted periods of day or at night for long

12/4/13 Roosevelt Truck Trail (Minerva in Essex Co.)
I hiked about .75 miles of the Roosevelt Truck Trail today at 11:30 a.m.
Here are a few of the species found:
Black-backed Woodpecker - at least 2 females (likely 4 birds). A short
distance from my car, I found two foraging woodpeckers
Just spotted 5 greater-white fronted geese mingling in a large flock of Canada
geese in the fields on Further Lane

In light of the recent incursion of Snowy Owls I thought the
following selection of papers would be of interest. They attempt to
questions about the aging and sexing of Snowy Owls.
The first paper on the list also discusses local movements of these
birds on Long Island and New York City,
A pair of ravens flew east this morning over the trail leading between
Southards Pond and Belmont Lake in North Babylon, just north of the horse
stable. Birds were vocalizing back and forth while flying.

at Jones Beach that would sit in the dunes and periodically fly out over the
ocean, in daylight, out of site, only to return a few minutes later with a
