[nysbirds-l] Peregrine Falcon near Goldsmith's Inlet, Cutchogue

2016-10-12 Thread robert adamo
Today, at ~ 1 P.M., Bev Prentice Robertson watched as the above dove at,
and scattered, a mixed flock of ~ 200 gulls (mostly laughing & ring billed)
which had been loafing on the beach.

[nysbirds-l] Sad news about Sarah Elliot

2016-10-12 Thread Richard Fried
Dear Fellow Birders,

It is with sadness that I let you know that our friend Sarah Elliott passed
away on October 12th. Sarah was a longtime member of the Linnaean Society of
New York. She led nature walks in Central Park and elsewhere, and maintained
the bird sighting book in the Boathouse. She regularly issued an informative
series of Nature Notes. In addition to her passion for birds and botany, Sarah
was keenly interested in literature and jazz. For the last year Sarah was cared
for by her niece Dukeanna.

Please check the LSNY website for updated
information.

[nysbirds-l] South Nassau birding on a day off

2016-10-12 Thread Tim Healy
Jones Beach saw a decent push of Yellow-rumps early this morning but things got
quiet in a hurry. About 50 species observed but nothing out of the ordinary.
The highlight was the first American Tree Sparrow of the season, perched on the
coast guard fence. A Magnolia Warbler, a western Palm, and a Parula were
feeding among the Rumps, kinglets, and sparrows on the lawn behind the
hedgerow. I stopped at JFK Sanctuary and Oceanside MNSA hoping to locate some
marshy sparrows but found one. JFK featured a large roosting congregation of
Black-crowned Night-Herons and a Green-winged Teal flock containing a
Blue-winged drake. Oceanside hosts a few lingering Greater Yellowlegs and a
Semipalmated Sandpiper. I was pleasantly surprised to see an Eastern
Meadowlark, pursued by a mockingbird, touch down in the marsh.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] IMPORTANT Possible danger to JAMAICA BAY ecosystems by proposed FLOODGATE. Meetings Oct 13, 19 20.

2016-10-12 Thread Nancy Tognan
Birders:
I have heard that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is strongly recommending
a huge floodgate that would significantly restrict water flow to/from
Jamaica Bay (by more than 50%), even in the open position. The floodgate
would cross from Breezy Point, Queens to Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn.
