[nysbirds-l] No fun in getting just a "funny goose" !

2017-01-22 Thread robert adamo
Today, between church time and game time, I cruised the "Golden Trapezium",
bordered by Doctors Path, Sound Ave, Route 105, and Northville Turnpike,
Riverhead, Suffolk Co. From ~ 12:45 & 3 PM, this parcel, made up mostly of
sod farms, held about 1400 to 1500 Canada Geese, with the majority of
birds seen best from Northville Tpke. I probably was able to view close to
90% of the scattered birds, with the only bird of note being a type of
goose, best described by John Sep, as a "funny goose". In this case, the
bird had the size and body plumage of a Canada Goose, but with a mostly
white head...oh well, at least my team won !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] swan river preserve - east patchogue

2017-01-22 Thread leormand .
I spent some time at Swan River Preserve in East Patchogue this afternoon.
It was very quiet - however there were two (2) pairs of green-winged teal
duck and I was happily surprised to find and watch a Wilson's Snipe feeding
away on the south side.

Additionally, yesterday (1/21/17) I observed a merlin on Bay Avenue, near
the Great South Bay. I presume this is the neighborhood Merlin that has
hungout in this area the past few winters.

Re: [nysbirds-l] NYS eBird Hotspots: Recent Changes to wikipages

2017-01-22 Thread John Mora
BTW the golf course has put up "no trespassing" signs on all paths leading to
the links. These were not there two weeks ago.

We stayed on pavement near the club house and after ten minutes a waiter came
out to ask us what we were doing. We explained we were looking for a rare
goose and were not going to walk into the links and he did not object to our
scoping the birds from there.

[nysbirds-l] NYS eBird Hotspots: Recent Changes to wikipages

2017-01-22 Thread Ben Cacace
* For the NYS page & all County pages the "Top eBirders >" line has been
updated with links for 2017 and includes prior years through 2013.

* For *Orange County* a page was created for 'Harriman State Park' (9
locations).

* For *Hamilton County* the Top 10 locations have been created and placed
at the top of the list.

On the Alphabetical listing of Counties on the NYS page this county is
highlighted in purple. Purple means these pages have 'static' Top 10
locations. These pages don't need to be updated on a monthly basis except
to add revelant links and images.

Counties highlighted in green have pages for ALL locations and 'dynamic'
pages for the Top 10 locations. Dynamic pages are updated with total spp. #
& color codings for locations based on eBird's color system (gray to red).
The Counties highlighted tan have 'dynamic' pages for the Top 10 locations.

* For the *Oswego County* page I've removed 'Toad Harbor' from the Three
Mile Bay WMA page since it appears to be outside of the Wildlife Management
Area.

I watched a "birder" walk up to the goose flick and flush it at around 1pm.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose present at St. Charles Cemetery

2017-01-22 Thread John Mora
Having seen this post we rushed to the cemetery but all geese where gone.

Located pair of common ravens in tree in the Barnacle area. Revamps called,
preened flew to a telephone pole and finally flew off towards the Southern
State.

At the private golf course next to Pinelawn we saw the Ross goose and the
immature snow goose next to each other. This was near the southern pond and
after 15 minutes these geese joined 40 Canada geese and walked over the
hillside.

Not many geese at Belmont Lake - no Barnacle.
