[nysbirds-l] Sands Point Preserve, etc; Wood Ducks
Another quiet, too warm day at the Sands Point Preserve this morning (10/28). The highlight was 17 Wood Ducks on the pond at 8AM. This is a record high count for this location. Land birds were few but I came across a small movement of birds loosely associating with some White-throated Sparrows on a sunny spot of the cliff-side trail. They included not one but two Black-and-White Warblers, a yellow Palm Warbler, and a bright Nashville Warbler showing some faint red feathering on the crown. The only other passerines of note were a single Field Sparrow and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo that flew low, directly overhead. I thought that a single American Crow flying by was unusual here; I just don’t see them much here anymore. Back in the 70s and 80s, there were substantial noisy flocks that could always be relied upon to find a roosting Great Horned Owl for you! There were finally some loons on LI Sound; 3 Common and 1 Red-throated. After the preserve, I trudged west to Prospect Point. Here, I added 380 Brant, 4 Green-winged Teal on the beach, 15 Surf Scoters flying east, 5 Black-bellied Plovers, and a Savannah Sparrow. [nysbirds-l] Vote Yes or No
THanks! Kenneth Mc Dermott terrei...@verizon.net Yes or No This vote only requires you to forward it to someone else for it to be counted. YES OR NO As many of you are aware, the Knights of Columbus submitted to congress that the words "Under God" should be added to our pledge of allegiance. Both Houses of Congress passed the law and it was signed by President Eisenhower in 1954. The information below was based on a poll taken by NBC on what percentage should keep the words in our pledge versus the percent who want it removed. If you read this and agree that "under God" should be left in the pledge, then just forward it to others and you have voted for it to be left in. If you delete it and don't forward it you are voting NO to "under God." Easy, huh? "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America , and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Shock to NBC This is not sent for discussion. If you agree, forward it... If you don't, delete it. I don't want to know one way or the other. By my forwarding it, you know how I feel.. 86% to keep God in the Pledge of Allegiance and 14% against.. That is a pretty commanding' public response. I was asked to send this on, if I agreed or delete if I didn't. Now it is your turn. It is said that 86% of Americans believe the word God should stay. Therefore, I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a mess about having God in the Pledge of Allegiance Why should our Nation cater to 14%? If you agree, pass this on. If not, simply delete. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Turtle Cove/ Orchard Beach- Pelham Bay Park, Bronx
A City Island Birds walk was supposed to be Sunday but was rescheduled late yesterday for this morning because of the weather forecast. We were rewarded with a beautiful day, wonderful friendly people and some nice birds. A very cooperative Wilson’s Snipe and Pectoral Sandpiper were the highlights. Sadly we missed a LeConte’s Sparrow in Turtle Cove, seen only minutes before we arrived by other birders. This is indeed a good find and a rarity for here. We waited for the bird to emerge from the grasses. It popped up and Matthieu Benoit saw it momentarily. If one waits, they may get lucky. I believe it is still in the vicinity. The bird was seen near the metal bridge. There were about a dozen of us in a small space and I’m guessing our presence kept the bird in the spartina.
