[nysbirds-l] Heads Up ... (Possible) Common Ringed Plover at Sagg Pond, Suffolk County

This morning I had an interesting plover that showed a lot of the
characteristics of a juv CRPL.   The bird was notably larger than
surrounding Semipalmated Plovers and had a robust, chunky feel to it.  An
extensive black mask seemed to reach the bill at the gape and the pale
'eye-stripe' was extensive and broadened after the eye.  The bird also just
'felt' different and was clearly not part of the local SemiP gang who were
harassing it mercilessly (as they did the Wilson's Plover last week).
Eventually they flushed it and it flew close by me, but DID NOT call, and
crossed over the dunes towards the beach.  It did not return as far as I
can tell.  I put some crappy distant digi-shots on eBird (camera in the car
due to the rain although it was probably too distant for a 400mm lens
anyway).  Looks like a decent candidate but would need better photos to be
sure.  Just a heads up if others are out this evening or tomorrow morning.

p.s. Parking restrictions are still in effect until Labor Day ($100 parking
tickets there for non Southampton residents after 9am).

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird, East Hampton

[Anthony Collerton]

Female / Imm type with 3,000 assorted ‘ickies’ (mostly Red-winged Blackbirds 
and Brown-headed Cowbirds) on Stephen Hand’s Path.  Picked up and lost the bird 
quickly as the flock flushed but they are still here just further back from the 
road.  Just North of the Sag Turnpike but on posted private property currently. 
 This flock regularly uses the adjacent corn field though so shouldn’t go far.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird, East Hampton

Female / Imm type with 3,000 assorted ‘ickies’ (mostly Red-winged Blackbirds 
and Brown-headed Cowbirds) on Stephen Hand’s Path.  Picked up and lost the bird 
quickly as the flock flushed but they are still here just further back from the 
road.  Just North of the Sag Turnpike but on posted private property currently.

The mud flats are back. Although the cut is still closed (Sag Pond is also 
closed but the flats are gone).

100+ shorebirds at Mecox this morning including a late adult Baird’s Sandpiper, 
2 White-rumped Sandpipers, etc.  Also 3 Caspian and a few Royal Terns.

No Avocet in either location ...

Hit some of the usual spots.  20 shorebird species with the best being the 
American Avocet at Mecox at dawn and 9 Marbled Godwits, a Stilt Sandpiper and a 
Whimbrel at Cupsogue.

[nysbirds-l] Summer Tanagers in East Hampton

Just by way of interest.  Had a pair seemingly with a nest at a traditional 
site in NorthWest Harbor (restricted access) this morning.  Lots of agitated 
chattering when I approached the area where I suspect the nest is.  The male 
has also been singing here for some weeks.  This is a location where they have 
bred successfully in the past so fingers crossed.

Back on the blue boat at South Lake Drive.  This perch is much closer to shore 
than the North one, MUCH better views.  All the borders currently seem to be at 
the other end of the lake.

Took the Viking Fleet Whale Watching trip (sponsored by CRESLI) today  6 
hours, 30 miles South ... not a true pelagic but it does get birds.

Highlights:
80 Cory's Shearwaters (mostly Borealis but at least one Scopoli's Shearwater)

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilts at Jones Beach (No)

Was there from 6:00am to 7:30am and from 3:00pm to 4:30pm.  No sign of the
Stilts in the Swale (or a few other areas I checked) at those times.  The
mosquito-spraying helicopter was very active when I arrived, not sure if
that was a factor today.  Perhaps my timing was just off ...

I watched a "birder" walk up to the goose flick and flush it at around 1pm.  
Trying to get a photo with a point and shoot I think.  Not the sharpest knife

Montauk was hot this morning - Razorbills (75+), Dovekie (1), Red-necked Grebe 
(1), Black-legged Kittiwake (2) plus the usual stuff.

Glaucous Gull, Harlequin Duck (2), and Snowy Owl at Shinecock
Snow Bunting (25) at Tiana Beach

[nysbirds-l] Sea-watching from Amagansett this morning

Put in 3+ hours this morning from the beach closest to my house (Atlantic
Double Dunes Preserve in Amagansett) between roughly 9am and Noon.  Same
hunch as others I guess.  Highlights:

Black-capped Petrel (1)
Cory's Shearwater (2)
Sooty Shearwater (2)
Manx Shearwater (1)
Shearwater sp. (12-15)
Northern Gannet (1) - but no Brown Booby, even though I was apparently in
the right place at the right time, East of Nadir Souirgi's bird - it either
slipped past me or pulled further from shore).
Parasitic Jaeger (1)

Not a bad morning.  Others Out East seem to be seeing similar things, I'm
sure more will be turned up today ...
