RE: [nysbirds-l] Bob Kurtz, now passed
I was always happy when Bobby showed up to bird with us on Thursdays at Hempstead Lake SP. He was generous in sharing all kinds of information about our natural world and always welcomed me and shared his expertise at the hawk watch as well. As a new birder, I never felt like I was bothering him to ask to follow along as he birded or for an explanation when he commented on something I did not understand. I will think of him often at Hempstead and the hawk watch platform. My condolences to his family and close friends. [nysbirds-l] Nickerson Beach, Nassau - Fee Details
I stopped in at the administrative office at Nickerson to check on the details regarding the parking fees. Nickerson is a Nassau County (not NY state) property. Fees are collected daily - including from seniors. Fees are collected from 9 am to 4 pm. If you arrive before 9, you can enter without a fee and your car can remain in the lot once fees start being collected - there won't be anyone looking for a receipt/ticket on the dashboard. If you arrive after 4, there won't be toll takers collecting a fee. >From 9-4 fees are: Fee for Nassau County residents who have a Leisure Pass is $12. [nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow - Riis Park
The Henslow's Sparrow was seen at about 3:45 PM by 6 birders. All of the information in David Klauber's post is very helpful and was accurate for what we observed. The bird was flushed from short low grass in the center of the field when one birder stepped very close to it. It flew to the edge of the field on the north side bordering the golf course and remained low in the taller grass along the anchor fence in a sandy area left of where a Mylar balloon is caught in the grass. We never saw it fly out but did have brief views of it that area. It may have flown through the fence to the scrub around the golf course. Thanks to all who've posted descriptions today - both of the area and the bridge closure. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Riverhead, LI area sightings - mornign of 9/6/14.
Relying on directions in Bob Adamo's postings from 9/6 and 8/28, Brian Whipple and I observed the following in the Riverhead area this morning: We started at the sod field on the west side of Route 105, just south of Sound Ave, Riverhead, where we found an American Golden Plover and a Baird's Sandpiper among a loose flock of about 20 Killdeer. They were north of the fire hydrant which has been mentioned in other posts but in that same field, giving excellent scope views. Encouraged by other birders whom we met at the sod field, we then went to the "farm pond" described in Bob's email of 8/28 which is located on the south side of Sound Ave, west of Osborne Ave, between Oakleigh Avenue and Warner Drive, Baiting Hollow. There we were able to scope 4 Pectoral Sandpipers, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Killdeer, a Least Sandpiper, a Western Sandpiper and 2 other peeps - probably Semipalmated Sandpipers. Finally, we followed Bob's more complete directions in the 9/6 email to a farm road near the intersection of Route 51 and Co Rd. 111, Eastport, where we had 2 first winter Blue Grosbeaks on the same fence Bob described. The Mountain Bluebird was present and feeding from the snow fence at the corner of Hulse Landing Road and 25A for about 30 minutes at about 1 PM today. I also saw the Barnacle Goose right in the center of Eastport Pond after about 50 minutes of scoping - can't figure out where he was the whole time but he just popped into view at 2:45 PM. [nysbirds-l] LeConte's Sparrow Question
I am wondering if the access to the runway areas at Calverton is different on weekdays than during the weekend. Will the area where people were parking/standing to view the LeConte's Sparrow be accessible during the week? Thanks for any help you can give me.
