Sparrow was feeding near the bayberry on the west
side of the entrance road to the WE2 Coast Guard Station. An adult Red-
headed Woodpecker was reported from the WE2 parkway turnaround but
could not be relocated. All in all a good (and overdue) morning of
birding.

We found neither the previously reported Pink-footed or Barnacle Goose
at Sunken Meadow State Park today around 1:00PM. Small flocks of
Canada Geese were widely scattered around the park. The flocks
appeared restless, moving frequently.

A female King Eider was discovered this morning in Jones Inlet towards the Pt.
Lookout side of the Inlet, floating south on the outgoing tide. Also present in
the inlet were scattered flocks of approx. fifty Common Eider. Land birding was
very slow, with a few flyover pipits and goldfinch.

2:30PM. Feeding at the tip of the east jetty was an immature Black-legged
Kittiwake with a few Razorbills at the mouth of the inlet. We searched the
inlet area in vain for a Dovekie reported earlier that morning.

Bird Club members found a single Lapland Longspur on the dock just north of the
gazebo. This bird was incredibly cooperative, continually feeding on the lawn
as cameras clicked and scopes were set up, allowing approaches within twenty
feet.

Tonight at 7:25pm I saw the first wave of migrating BRANT from the Town of
Newburgh as a wavy assembly of about 35 birds flew north over the Hudson
River. This is the earliest date that I have ever had them moving north in the
spring though I have seen them do so over many, many years.
Yellow-throated Vireo about midway between the North and South Gardens. The
West Pond held about six species of waterfowl and not much else.

huge flight of butterflies chiefly comprising Red Admirals and American Ladies.

Lesser Black-backed Gull and a sizable concentration of Scoters (mostly Black)
that we estimated at about 700 birds. In the Zach's Bay picnic area (opposite
Field 6 on the north side of the Ocean Parkway) we kicked up a spiffy-looking
Lark Sparrow at about 1:00PM.

most of us headed down to the median west of the large
poplar tree at WE and quickly came across a young male White-winged Crossbill
feeding in a Japanese Black Pine just west of the poplar tree.

Just saw the discussion on the Jones Beach Shrike and, in line with Shaibal's
comment on late season Loggerheads I have records of having Loggerheads at the
old Galeville Airport in Ulster County. At that time we were allowed to
drive on the tarmac and I had many up close observations of
in the vicinity.

Parkway Closure Update
News 12 LI indicated at about 3:00PM this afternoon that law enforcement
authorities will decide tonight whether to continue the search along Ocean
Parkway for evidence related to the discovery of the four bodies east of Gilgo
Beach.

progress. I noted that coastal New England recorded a fair number of Dovekies,
apparently related to the December 26th coastal storm. Perhaps there are other
birds around. Has anyone checked the Timber Point Boat Basin in Great River?
