A possible Cory's Shearwater was observed yesterday evening feeding with
100's of Common terns in Plum Gut (between Orient Point Plum Island),
Suffolk Co..
Aboard a charter fishing boat w/o binoculars the bird was readily
identifiable as a shearwater, appeared to have markings of a Cory's. The
Pectoral sandpiper (6), white rump sand. (2) among shorebirds
at field seven noon today.

Encountered probable Thick-billed Murre in the inlet at Lake Montauk around
3:45 pm today, bird swam into the inlet, diving occasionally as observed
from the west jetty. Was re-located about 4:05 pm just south of the usual
gull loafing area sandy beach on east side of the inlet just south of the
While I was on the bird (~8:30-9:30 am), the tide was low and the bird
disappeared from few many times; so some patience may be in order, However
the tide should now be just past high (Smith pt Bridge 1:24pm) so I suppose

My wife Lynne & I walked down to Squassux Landing in Brookhaven hamlet late

Brookhaven Hamlet this evening.

Was not able to re-locate the King Eider reported @ Camp Hero Overlook
despite two hours of scoping huge Eider/Scoter flock, there are hundreds of
Common Eiders & thousands of Scoters, all three species, so may have missed
King.

As per Derek Rogers' earlier post I conducted a seawatch for about 1 1/2
hrs. starting at 6:45 am, Northern Gannets streamed by in groups of from
3-25 adding up to over 200, Black Scoters mostly in large flocks added up
to over 600, the Common Tern flight noted by Derek amounted to only two
small
Encountered probable Thick-billed Murre in the inlet at Lake Montauk around
3:45 pm today, bird swam into the inlet, diving occasionally as observed
from the west jetty. Was re-located about 4:05 pm just south of the usual
gull loafing area & sandy beach on east side of the inlet just south of the
Re: Sibley, 2nd edition. This morning, I called the number given in an
earlier post (1 800 793 2665) twice, both times I was told by two different
reps "there is no replacement program" available from Knopf, and that the
information circulating on the internet is false.

While I was on the bird (~8:30-9:30 am), the tide was low and the bird
disappeared from few many times; so some patience may be in order, However
the tide should now be just past high (Smith pt Bridge 1:24pm) so I suppose
the birds location and activity may have changed accordingly.

At 5 pm there were 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, two 1st winter and two
adult non-breeding birds along the ocean beach just east of Bellport Beach,
Fire island, Suffolk Co..
