This morning I had an interesting plover that showed a lot of the
characteristics of a juv CRPL. The bird was notably larger than
surrounding Semipalmated Plovers and had a robust, chunky feel to it. An
extensive black mask seemed to reach the bill at the gape and the pale

The mud flats are back. Although the cut is still closed (Sag Pond is also
closed but the flats are gone).
100+ shorebirds at Mecox this morning including a late adult Baird’s Sandpiper,
2 White-rumped Sandpipers, etc. Also 3 Caspian and a few Royal Terns.
No Avocet in either location ...

Back on the blue boat at South Lake Drive. This perch is much closer to shore
than the North one, MUCH better views. All the borders currently seem to be at
the other end of the lake.

Currently on the mast of a small dark blue hulled sailing dinghy at the very
South end of Lake Montauk. Best viewed from South Lake Drive. 3:30pm

Took the Viking Fleet Whale Watching trip (sponsored by CRESLI) today 6
hours, 30 miles South ... not a true pelagic but it does get birds.
Highlights:
80 Cory's Shearwaters (mostly Borealis but at least one Scopoli's Shearwater)
25 Sooty Shearwaters
40 Great Shearwaters
4 Manx Shearwaters
Took the Viking Fleet Whale Watching trip (sponsored by CRESLI) today 6
hours, 30 miles South ... not a true pelagic but it does get birds.
Highlights:
80 Cory's Shearwaters (mostly Borealis but at least one Scopoli's Shearwater)
25 Sooty Shearwaters
40 Great Shearwaters
4 Manx Shearwaters
Currently roosting on the mussel beds West of the main flat.

Was there from 6:00am to 7:30am and from 3:00pm to 4:30pm. No sign of the
Stilts in the Swale (or a few other areas I checked) at those times. The
mosquito-spraying helicopter was very active when I arrived, not sure if
that was a factor today. Perhaps my timing was just off ...

I watched a "birder" walk up to the goose flick and flush it at around 1pm.
Trying to get a photo with a point and shoot I think. Not the sharpest knife
in the drawer
