Re:[nysbirds-l] Golden-crowned Sparrow and private property birds
Fellow Birders, Chasers, and others similarly afflicted. There is the exciting report of a Golden-crowned Sparrow representing perhaps the 4th NYS sighting. It is on private property (unfortunately), and as of yet the location, permission to visit, and other parameters have not been disclosed. Some of you ( myself included ) would like to have this information so that we might enjoy this bird as well, while there are some out there who promote non-disclosure. *Unfortunately* there is precedent for discretion or non-disclosure being a good idea, and that sucks: don't you be the cause of that idea being perpetuated! So if you are one of those who would like to see this bird, and would like *subsequent* good birds in such places be made known, perhaps the following would be something to take note of and put into practice... Private property is, well, ~private~. Remember that. Most if not all of us would be alarmed or at least concerned if an unexpected group of people assembled outside. So behave *as if it were your home* and treat them as you would hope to be treated. You don't have the "right", but if you are nice you will be given permission. It is so much better to ask permission first, than try to after you have already pissed them off. Should a non birder inquire, show them your book with the bird in it, offer them a look through your optics, and *share your enthusiasm*. Also put yourself in the shoes of the finder of a rarity, or the person who puts themselves out to obtain access for the marauding hoards that will descend upon the hapless home-owner. DON'T MAKE THEM REGRET REPORTING OR REQUESTING ACCESS. As a visitor, it should be of utmost concern to each and every one of us to dispel any qualms the residents may have. This is for the benefit of the resident, for you, and for future birders hoping to get to the location in question. IOW don't make them conclude birders are jerks, and don't ruin it for others! How to do this? First of all, be *exceedingly* polite. NEVER TRESPASS. Do not enter onto the property unless *you specifically* have been given permission to enter onto the property. Don't knock on their door, don't ask to use their bathroom etc. Don't block the road or driveways, and be conscious of the effect on the neighbors too. Be polite to them *as well*. If you see someone blocking the road and creating a potential issue, *gently* remind them that we will all suffer and that we are trying to avoid any potential problems. If reports are posted with instructions on where to park, where to go, what to do/not do etc. -follow the suggestions- Remember 'first impressions': If the first on the scene create an issue no matter how small, it may ruin it for others thereafter. OTOH if the first on the scene create a positive experience and the take away is that 'birders are such nice people' it will keep the door open. "The only thing better than seeing a good bird is getting others on it" - A.G. FWIW I have been to many a private residence that had hosted a rarity. Many hosts come away with it being a positive experience; some have sign-in books I bring a case of suet or bag of bird seed to leave as a gift. If you are a good photographer ( or even if you're not ) maybe send them a print. *It promotes good will*. It would be great if we collectively could disabuse those who believe it, that disclosure of these birds will create a problem. If that doesn't work, we can always tar and feather the transgressors and release them in Central Park so we can receive thrice hourly ebird sighting reports of them. ;) Happy impending new year and here's to good birds, Arie Gilbert North Babylon, NY WWW.Powerbirder.blogspot.com WWW.qcbirdclub.org Where's That Bird? Re: [nysbirds-l] Summer 2018 Tern Update
1. Is photo documentation necessary? "a picture is worth a thousand words" And with the prevalence of cameras its always a good idea. Now if they can only make them a *LOT* lighter... 1a. Arctic Terns are common and easy to find, so documentation is not important In Maine perhaps... 1b. Arctic Terns are rare, at least in most years, and hard to identify, so documentation is very important Prior to their occurrence at Cupsogue being divulged I think I speak for many when I say that trying for that species was on few birder's radar. 2. Where do Arctic Terns occur in NYS? Worth checking any tern nesting or loafing location at this time of year. 2a. Arctic Terns occur everywhere, from far offshore to small upstate lakes and the Great Lakes; there’s no pattern. If you don't look, you won't know. 2b. Arctic Terns occur at Cupsogue; searching elsewhere is a masochistic waste of time Ha ha! 2c. Arctic Terns occur regularly around all of Long Island’s ocean inlets. Those are probably the best places to look and (occur regularly) is being sussed out as we speak. 3. What does “second-summer type” mean and how should I feel about it? It means the Terns themselves take a relaxed approach to plumage sequence and I can live with that. 3a. When I see the term, “second-summer type” I want to throw up and nobody has the right to make me say it. nauseous perhaps, but whatever. 3b. The term, “second-summer type” is going to keep on coming up so we should tolerate it, even though it doesn’t refer to anything that’s biologically valid. What's wrong with 'sub-adult' plumage. Not juvenal, not adult... 3c. The concept of “second-summer type” terns is like a revelation that unlocks the secrets of the universe. Can I have some of what you're smoking? 4. Does Arctic Tern occurrence actually dip in late June, between peaks in mid June and early July, or is this an artifact? see 2c On 6/27/2018 11:45 AM, Shaibal Mitra wrote: The 2018 summer tern season on Long Island has been great so far and is going to set records for Arctic Tern in several ways: total records, total observers contributing independently documented records, and records from sites apart from Moriches Inlet, such as Rockaway Inlet, Jones Inlet, and Old Inlet. Congrats Joe! ( wish I had your hearing ) On 5-26, Ian Resnick, Arlene Rawls, and I birded Shawangunk. We Crossed paths with Shai Mitra and Pat Lindsey, the former had informed us that he believed he had heard a Henslow's Sparrow. Our group walked to the blind where one had been last year, and then down to the next blind, and Ian though he heard a faint / distant bird. Neither Arlene or I heard it , and all who had seemed to think it was distant and or calling faintly, and not often and loudly as the one last year had done. Ian and I were musing about the following... Is there any merit to the thought that a bird -hoping- for a mate would sing loudly and frequently, while one who may have attracted one would be more demure? thoughts? Re:[nysbirds-l] Mtn bluebird CONTINUES Tues 12-19
I just got a report that the bird is being seen now @ 11:14am These directions may be better if you are unable to use the map links below. from the Northwest corner of the Robert Moses field 2 lot, walk to the paved roadway and continue west onto the sand road ( by foot, permit access only!) continue west. you will see the roadway fork, with a sharp left turn - but **continue STRAIGHT** along bay side. after walking **way down** past the open area to your right that is fenced off by string, the road will jog left for ~75', then jog right (west) now you will be separated from the bay side by thick bayberry bushes - continue on. you will see a "grey telephone pole like stump" along the left/south edge. I also scraped an arrow in the sand some 50' +/- to the west of that, the bird has been seen in this area ( on south side ) and delightfully, frequently perches at the very top of the trees along the edge of the road. [nysbirds-l] Curlew Sandpiper vs Dunlin in Basic Plumage
In a recent post it was said “Shorebirds are not easy.” Yep. I’ll admit to a modicum of embarrassment at getting this ID wrong. Having said so, multiple field guides refer to a field mark of white rump, which I saw well, but upon which I apparently placed undeserved weight. Well if you can't trust a field guide... Of course with a potential rarity the question becomes does one wait until you are > 100% certain, or do you get the info out right away. Some said parse the post with caveats such as “possible” or other pull-backs; Its just that at the time everyone present concurred on the ID. Doesn't excuse the animus. In other posts, the age, overall shape, and molt have been suggested as taking precedence over what I heretofore felt is an 'obvious' field mark, *if* seen well. Those other elements require far greater study IMHO though. A reference web page was proffered regarding this “ID Challenge”. Careless readers, perhaps including myself, might stop at the top of the page where it states that a previous instance was ultimately decided because of, wait for it, the white rump! The page contains valuable information though arguably as explained above, interjects a bit of confusion. Hopefully, an actual Curlew Sandpiper will show up and more hopefully, I will be the one to find it ( and correctly ID it ) In that event, be on the lookout for a posting where the species listed is 'Wolf' Arie North Babylon, NY --- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG. http://www.avg.com -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Re: [nysbirds-l] Godwit at jones ponds
The bird found earlier today by Kevin Rogers ( Nice Kevin!) turned out to be a Hudsonian Godwit. After a lot of looking by several of us, Brendan Fogarty relocated it at Short Beach by the coast Guard station at west end 2. He alerted us, but by the time we returned to the WE2 parking lot he updated us that it had flown. Remarkably, it stopped and consorted with several BB Plovers in the WE2 lot! We got good yet inconclusive looks until it was inadvertently spooked by another arriving birder, yet in doing so, cinching the ID. an early attempt tomorrow at the west end ponds or short beach will be a good bet on relocating this bird, for those interested. [nysbirds-l] Montauk pelagic birds on CRESLI whale watching trip 7/9/17
I did an impromptu trip yesterday and was very pleased with the results . We cruised east of Montauk and south of Block Island to where the whales and other sea life was feeding. The Fin whale show was exceptional. Short nosed dolphins were in the hundreds. Cory's and Great Shearwaters were present in large numbers, offering study at close range both on the wing and sitting on the surface. Large numbers of Wilson's Storm-petrels were present as well. No less than 10 Sooty Shearwaters were seen, as well as one Manx Shearwater seen well. For those unfamiliar, the very large vessel used is part of the "Viking Fleet" and is **very stable**, so more suited for those who despair of mal de mer. The trips are also very reasonably priced, and you are back at the dock by 3:30pm the same day. We did not have a rarity as had been reported recently, but the trip's results were excellent nevertheless. One thing is for certain, each trip is unique so one never knows what will show up when... I spent a while looking for the reported yt warbler without success with Liz DiNapoli and Dave LaMagna. Liz heard a bird call which we investigated and we called Dave back as he had just left. It was a bee bzz bzz bzz and a possible Golden-winged Warbler. We could not get a look though.
