I spent the morning searching some areas around Coney Island for the
GRAY-HOODED GULL without success. Places visited in order from 6:15-11:45 were
Marine Park ballfields, Floyd Bennett, Plum Beach, Manhattan Beach, Sheepshead
Bay Marina & the Coney Island boardwalk east of the Wonder Wheel.

saw when I scanned the Laughing Gull flock. It is very tame and came in to

weekend on a trip to Coney Island. We have only been seriously birding for a
year or so now, and we weren't planning on making any bird counts that day, but
we hadn't actually ever recorded any Laughing Gulls on our

Some of these show wing molt and wing and tail feather molt, and a couple show

Having studied the Brooklyn Gray-hooded Gull at some length yesterday, my
impression was of an adult in breeding plumage, with flight feathers no more
worn than would be expected on a wild bird at the start of the pre-basic molt.

Thanks to the wonderful posts from New York birders I waited to 2:00pm to
make the drive from NJ. When I arrived at Coney Island at 3:20pm (low tide was
2:04pm) I was somewhat disheartened by the thousands of people on the beach.
The Gray-Hooded Gull (as many of you already know) was present again today.
As I left the boardwalk at Coney Island someone (Edna) said, "Oh, I thought
I was going to be the sacrificial birder". To which I replied..."Well, now
you should hang around a little longer". Around 15 minutes later and

day being more productive for gulls loafing on the beach, I revisited Coney
Island this afternoon in search of the Gray-hooded Gull. I immediately noticed
that there were way more LAGU than had been present this
