The Thick-billed Murre continues in Shinnecock Inlet, quite close to the wall

Ernst Mutchnik and I saw the Thick-billed Murre near the end of the west jetty
and then further toward the middle if the mouth of the inlet. We lost sight of
it about 15 minutes ago.
A close Razorbill is feeding inside the inlet, and a female Harlequin Duck is
near the jetty.

At 2:15 this afternoon, an immature Black-headed Gull was at the end of Cove
Hollow Road, on the mud flat close to the end of the road. After a while, it
took flight and went to the left, out of sight.

For about an hour late this afternoon, i watched two Rough-legged Hawks at
Epcal property, presumably the same birds that were reported yesterday. The

In Crocheron Park, I watched in vain for the Chat from 10:55 to noon. The
Western Tanager appeared at 11:35 in the sweet gums east of the pond, having
flown in from the south along the highway. At 11:55, it flew to the south side
of the pond.

CR 51 between Eastport and Riverhead, we had ca. 15 Black-bellied Plovers and

In late morning, 2 immature Iceland Gulls on beach at Road L, along Dune Road
west of Ponquogue Bridge, and 3 at Shinnecock, just west of inlet; also 3 Snowy
Owls seen from road, one on the large sandbar north and slightly west of the
Inlet. I then searched at length for the Pink-footed Goose ,
I did something of a whirlwind tour of the South Fork today, befitting the
strong winds that made viewing difficult in places.
At Sag Pond, the only birds of any note were a pair of Northern Pintail; no
notable gulls were evident.
A single Snow Goose accompanied Canada's at Deep Hollow. A half-ho
A sea watch at RMSP from 1:30 to 2:15 yielded 1 Sooty Shearwater, a group of 3
Black Terns, 2 Gannets, and ca. 25 Black Scoters. At Nickerson Beach west of
Point Lookout, birds in the beach at the Common Tern colony included ca. 78
Black Skimmers and 2 Black Terns. A Gull-billed Tern came in an
Dick Belanger and I are looking at a distant phalarope that appears to be adult
Red-necked, on bar opposite trail to shore, west of the walk able flats.

I just arrived at Jones Beach West End, only to learn that the Common Ground
Dove was apparently taken by a Merlin. Sam Janszzo, who discovered it
yesterday, and other birders saw the Merlin stoop to the vicinity of the dove

At Baisley Pond Park in Queens this morning, a Red-necked Grebe and 52
Redheads. This is shortly north of Belt Parkway on Rockaway Blvd.
The adult Red-shouldered Hawk was behind the visitors' center at Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge.
The Wilson's Snipe was at the east side of Gerritson Creek b

At about 7:30 this morning, I counted 6 Buff-breasted Sandpipers, 1 American
Golden Plover, 70 Killdeer, and several Least Sandpipers on the fields east of
Northville Turnpike, from the sure that John Gluth described on
Saturday(firefighters' training facility).
Most of these birds are not in s
Between 6:45 and 7:15 pm, I counted 59 Common Nighthawks from a vantage point
in Route 25A in East Setauket. They passed over a broad front, with some
lingering, evidently to feed. Also more than 50 Chimney Swifts, as well as a
great many American Robins heading toward (I presume) a roost site.
The staging Oystercatchers at the West End (Jones Beach) Coast Guard "island"
have been at least temporarily replaced by Black Skimmers -- at least 300. I
started counting and reached 120 when kayakers flushed the flick, which
dispersed.

The Barnacle Goose that was found yesterday at North Babylon High School is on
Elda Lake, adjacent to the school's playing fields. It is visible from Phelps
Lane, shortly west of Deer Park Avenue, just south of the high school. Accessed
by going south from Exit 39 on the Southern State Parkway.
A Ross's Goose and a Cackling Goose are on the lake (9:00). No Greater
White-fronted visible in repeated checks over the last hour.
