[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Bird Club Evening Presentation: VULTURE: THE PRIVATE LIFE OF AN UNLOVED BIRD

2018-06-13 Thread Dennis Hrehowsik
*Tuesday June 19th @ 7PM*

*BBC Evening Presentation:*

*KATIE FALLON PRESENTS: VULTURE: THE PRIVATE LIFE OF AN UNLOVED BIRD*

*BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY, CENTRAL BRANCH AT GRAND ARMY PLAZA*

Vultures are often overlooked, underappreciated, and unloved, despite the
vital role they play healthy ecosystems. Worldwide, vultures are more
likely to be threatened or endangered than any other group of raptor, but
in the United States Turkey and Black Vultures may be increasing in number.
Based on Katie Fallon’s new book, this presentation will discuss the life
and times of the noble Turkey Vulture, including its feeding, nesting, and
roosting habits, migratory behaviors, and common misconceptions.

Katie Fallon lives in West Virginia and is co-founder of the Avian
Conservation Center of Appalachia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to
conserving the region’s wild birds through research, education, and
rehabilitation.

*Tuesday May 22nd @7PM*

*BBC Evening Presentation:*

Presenter: Angelo Soto-Centeno, professor of Evolutionary Biology at
Rutgers University – Newark and most recently a postdoctoral fellow at the

Angelo was born in Puerto Rico, and since early childhood he experienced
island biodiversity first hand. His fascination with animals that can fly
led him on a path to study bats, a group of one the most misunderstood
mammals worldwide. Today, he travels the Caribbean islands searching and
documenting living and fossil species of bats to understand the causes that
led to changes in the biodiversity of these imperiled mammals.

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Bird Club Evening Presentation

2016-09-13 Thread Dennis Hrehowsik
*Tuesday, September 20th, 7:00 P.M.*

*Great Gull Island*

*Presenters: Helen Hays and Joe DiCostanzo*

*Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch
 at Grand Army Plaza*

Helen Hays and Joe DiCostanzo, researchers at the Museum of Natural
History, will present highlights from more than 40 years of research,
monitoring and habitat support of the nesting Roseate and Common terns on
Great Gull Island in Eastern Long Island Sound. Currently a record 9,500
Common tern pairs and 1300 Roseate tern pairs nest there. Discovery of
abnormal nestlings sounded the early warnings on toxic levels of PCBs in
the Sound in the 1970’s. A large number of volunteers assist during the
breeding season, and the project has partners in South America where they
discovered the first concentration of Roseate terns in the non-breeding
season.

*Connecting to Native Biodiversity in the Urban Landscape*

*Presenter: Marielle Anzelone*

*Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch
 at Grand Army Plaza*

Marielle Anzelone from the NYC Wildflower Week will be presenting their
work including plans for a PopUP Forest in Times Square. Their intent is to
transform a public plaza in Times Square into a patch of forest with a
temporary installation of trees and wildflowers.

Marielle is the founder and executive director of NYC Wildflower Week. Her
training as an urban ecologist helps her connect people to nearby nature
and determine how design, education, and government can promote this
relationship. She is also advancing local biodiversity policy. A bill that
she helped develop, supporting native plants in public landscapes, became
law in 2013.

Please join the Brooklyn Bird Club Tuesday, Sept 29th, 7:00 PM for:

*Ecology of the Gowanus Canal and Watershed*

*Presenter: Andrea Parker*

Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch
 at Grand Army Plaza

Our speaker will be Andrea Parker, the Executive Director of the Gowanus
Canal Conservancy. She will discuss the complex urban ecology of Brooklyn's
Gowanus Canal and watershed, including cleanup, recent development
pressure, and the effects of climate change. All of the GCC programs, from
manually turning compost to discussing community vision for the Gowanus
Greenscape, build towards their goals of an open, clean and alive Canal and
watershed. How is the GCC facilitating citizen stewardship of the
watershed?

Andrea is a landscape architect with a background in horticulture, with a
passion for regenerating urban infrastructure. She has been involved with
the Gowanus Canal Conservancy for four years, and she has been the
Executive Director for one year.

*An environmental DNA (eDNA) approach to discovering life in NYC Ponds.*

*Presenter: Seth Wollney*

Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch
 at Grand Army Plaza

Various human impacts, such as pollution and buildings, can shape
freshwater pond ecosystems in the urban landscape of New York City. Ponds
are important centers of biodiversity in cities and benefit humans in many
ways. At our June meeting, Seth Wollney will talk about his project to
inventory the biological communities in seven local ponds using
cutting-edge environmental DNA collection techniques. The data collected
will lead to a deeper understanding of what humans can do to help conserve
these important ecosystems for future generations.

As a native New Yorker, Seth Wollney has been a life-long naturalist
exploring the ponds, woods, fields and beaches of the city. While
passionate about almost everything that concerns ecology and natural
history, he has a particular interest in birds, turtles, dragonflies and
moths. He is currently working on his doctoral degree at the Conservation
Genetics lab at the College of Staten Island, CUNY. His thesis project
investigates how biological communities found in urban ponds are impacted
by human activities with a particular focus on painted turtle ecology and
population biology. In March 2015, he received an Honorable Mention from
the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program!

Iceland: Land of Fire, Ice and BIRDS!

Presenter: Sandra Paci

Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch
at Grand Army Plaza

The lure of Iceland for birders lies not in the number of species to be
seen, but in the quality of those species and the opportunity to encounter
them in spectacularly beautiful and unspoiled landscapes, sometimes in
overwhelming numbers. Seabirds, shorebirds, waterfowl, and gulls are all
well represented. Some are special Icelandic races and subspecies found
nowhere else. Many birds in this sparsely populated land show a remarkable
lack of fear of humans, allowing for close viewing and photography. Join
Sandra Paci as she discusses her 2013 journey to this intriguing island
nation.

Sandra Paci was born in Baltimore, Maryland and lives in New York City,
where she works for a gallery in the Chelsea art district and is an active
member of the Brooklyn Bird Club and the Linnaean Society of New York.
Since first catching the travel bug in the early 1980s, she has ventured to
over twenty countries outside the U.S., mostly in Europe and Latin America.
Sandra became an avid birder in 2003 and has enjoyed long-distance birding
trips to Alaska, Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Iceland
and Morocco.
