[nysbirds-l] Common Raven
I just came home to a Common Raven sitting in the tree in my back yard croaking up a storm. I didn't expect it to be sitting in my yard, usually they are flying by. It was there for about 10 minutes until I guess the jays finally scared it off. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Common Raven - farmingville
This afternoon I observed a common Raven being chased off by a goose at Brookhaven Town Hall. The goose was defending its nest and I'm assuming the Raven was trying to steal an egg. With quite a few geese nests around the building and seeing a Raven for a second time in a month it will be interesting to see if they are successful at predating any nests or chicks. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] common raven - east patchogue
While on my morning run, just west of the Swan River (and south of Montauk Highway) I observed several crows and an Osprey above some trees - I then heard the unmistakeable call of a Common Raven. [nysbirds-l] Common Raven, Central Islip (Suffolk Co)
I forgot to post this on the day of the sighting (Thu., Feb 19th). Around 4:45, I picked up my son from private soccer training at the Central Islip campus of NYIT. While driving out of the main campus road, we observed a large black bird pecking at something in the snow. It turned out to be a Common Raven. We enjoyed views of it from the car at a distance of only 10 feet. It stared at us intently, you could see the intelligence in its eye. A bit unnerving. It reminded me of the game warden’s opinion of the velociraptors in the movie Jurassic Park: “That one... when she looks at you, you can see she's working things out...They remember...” Glenn Quinn Antonio Quinn Hauppauge, NY --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Common Raven Nest - Patchogue (Suffolk)
Two separate sightings of a pair of Common Ravens in Sayville earlier this month had me focusing my attention on the nearby water and cell towers in the area. About a week ago I noticed an interesting looking nest that had been built along the west side of the water tower in Patchogue. The overall size and structure of the nest seemed to look best for Common Raven. Sure enough, I drove by the water tower this morning to find two Common Ravens on the nest. One of the birds was physically in the nest and had a stick in it's bill (appeared to be nest building) and the other perched on the railing beside the nest and was calling frequently. The water tower is located on the south side of Montauk Highway, immediately south of West Lake in Patchogue. There is roadside parking along the south side of Montauk Highway, which is also the best location to view the nest. You can't miss the nest and it's easily seen with the naked eye, especially when approaching from the west. Like the Hampton Bays Ravens, these birds are spending quite a bit of time away from the nest therefore persistence may be necessary to eventually catch a glimpse of them. Good luck if you try and please keep a respectful distance from the water tower. This is a really unique opportunity to view these extremely interesting birds. [nysbirds-l] Common Raven, Lower Manhattan
This morning on my way to school, I had a flyover COMMON RAVEN seen from the Hudson River bike path where it crosses Christopher Street. While I was walking, I heard the distinctive croaking vocalization and stopped to look up for the bird. Sure enough, I spotted it flying a little above building-height from the north west, presumably having crossed the Hudson from New Jersey and continuing to fly south east over lower Manhattan. It was showing long, narrow wings, a long, wedge-shaped tail and slower, deeper wingbeats than those of an American Crow as well as the obvious large size when compared to nearby gulls. Unfortunately, I had no camera with me to document this as I know it is a very rare sighting in this borough, especially this far south. [nysbirds-l] COMMON RAVEN--Lakeland County Park (Suffolk Co.)
The highlight--however frustratingly brief--of a nearly 4-hour visit today at Lakeland County Park (Islandia) and adjoining Suffolk greenbelt, was the presence of at least one COMMON RAVEN. I actually had two encounters. The first was with one bird briefly glimpsed through gaps in the trees, flying not far above the treetops. My initial impression at first glance was of a raptor based on size and wing length. A second, better look revealed a large corvid with a rounded/wedge-shaped tail tip, carrying an object in its bill. As it moved off it uttered two soft, gutteral calls. The second encounter came approximately 15 minutes later and ~1/4 mile away when I heard several deep, resoundingly loud croaks from somewhere just to the east of the park. Unfortunately I never got a look at this bird (same individual as earlier sighting?), but the vocalizations were unmistakeable. Recalling a report not too long ago of 2 Ravens from the surrounding neighborhood, the prospect of local breeding seemed plausible. So when I got home I made a cursory search on GoogleMaps for water towers or other likely nesting sites within a reasonable radius of the park--without success. I'll try to go back in hope of getting better looks at the bird/s and the direction of their movement. I found another 40 species during during my visit, with a fair number of Spring migrants present, including Green Heron (1, photo), Eastern Phoebe (2), N. Rough-winged Swallow (2), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (14), Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (1), Brown Creeper (3), Hermit Thrush (1), Palm Warbler (5), Yellow-rumped Warbler (6), and Eastern Towhee (2) http://www.flickr.com/photos/jgluth_brb/sets/72157632448263840/with/8661805276/ -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

RE: [nysbirds-l] common raven - east patchogue
No, that's not a Common Raven; it's an American Crow (an adult, probably male). The square tail, relatively thin bill, and smooth, short throat feathers are all wrong for raven, but just right for crow. A raven should have a tail that is longer in the middle than the sides, a very deep bill, and long throat feathers. Compare the image at https://picasaweb.google.com/KevinJ.McGowan/Summer2012Birds#5758416976127251634. I admit that the bill of your bird is large, which is why I am guessing it is a male crow. The bill is big, yes, but not raven-big. I have been following the reports of ravens on Long Island with interest. They were missing from there during the 2000 Breeding Bird Atlas, but I suspected their return was likely. Please keep posting about sightings and nests! [nysbirds-l] Common Raven possible nest building in Co-Op City, Bronx 2/11-2/12
Hi All, Yesterday, I once again saw a pair of Ravens from my window. The birds were flying back and forth between a patch of woods near the Pelham Bay Bridge and a neighboring building. Once I grabbed my binoculars, I saw that they were carrying sticks to the top of a building near my own! After running downstairs to get a better look, I again saw a raven with a twig, but lost the bird behind a building and did not see exactly where the stick was brought. After that, I saw the pair perched on the large structure housing a water tower atop 120 Elgar Place and saw them drive away a Red-tailed Hawk. I saw no further nesting activity aside from the birds consistently hanging around the same area at the top of 120 Elgar. Today, I briefly checked on them. I did not see any more material carries, but did see the pair again perched atop 120 Elgar. I have not yet seen a nest and if there is one, it could easily be hidden from view in that large structure. [nysbirds-l] Common Raven, etc., Epcal area (Suffolk)
I visited the Epcal (formerly Grumman) property on Saturday, Feb. 12, in midmorning. A third-year BALD EAGLE flew up from the ground near the western runway (where the LeConte's Sparrow had been) and made its way westward. A handsome ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (pale morph) was soaring about. I saw no passerines except for 5 FIELD SPARROWS along the frozen pond near the southern entrance to the property. Most noteworthy was a COMMON RAVEN along Line Road, a short distance south of Grumman Road. A drive along Dune Road, from Westhampton Beach to Shinnecock Inlet and back, yielded no notable sightings. From several vantage points, including the Inlet, the ocean seemed nearly devoid of birds. [nysbirds-l] Common Raven Pair Rocky Pt
Late this morning a pair of Common Ravens were seen flying across Whiskey Rd., Middle Island at the southern end of the Rocky Pt Preserve. They landed on a telephone pole where they interacted by mutual grooming, perhaps a sign of potential breeding. [nysbirds-l] Common Raven, Suffolk County
At 4pm today a vocalizing Common Raven was seen flying from east to west near Cedar Beach (Brookhaven Township) in Mt Sinai. After spotting it (and hearing it) near the corner of Harbor Rd and Pipe Stave Hollow Rd and snapping off a few pics with a point and shoot camera. I jumped in the car and started heading west toward the beach hoping to overcome the bird before it reached the inlet. Alas, I was stuck behind a slow driver and lost sight of the bird. Only to have 2 large black birds rise up out of the corner of my eye and disappear behind/above my car just as I reached the inlet. Were these both ravens? Crows? I jumped out of my car and they were nowhere to be seen. I saw neither a crow nor a raven in several passes up and down the corridor. Kathryn Klecan
