[nysbirds-l] Glossy Ibis Heckscher SP Suffolk

2018-03-30 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Two Glossy Ibis flew over the boat basin at Heckscher SP this morning
around 8:20, heading east, on the early side for Suffolk Co.

I was hoping they would put down in the marsh but they appeared to keep
going. I did not have time to check Timber Point but it may be worth a
look.

[nysbirds-l] Glossy Ibis - bluebirds - EPCAL

2016-04-21 Thread leormand
On my way to EPCAL I spied 6 glossy ibis feeding in the mulch piles on the east
side of wading river road, just north of the LIE. I have seen these birds here
over the past several years, must be good eating. Also, I caution anyone
against stopping for more than a quick glance as the property owners are, not
the friendliest folk.

EPCAL was quiet aside from bluebirds and some goldfinches chasing one another.
No sign of an SEO and only one kestrel observed.

On my morning run along Roe avenue I saw a glossy ibis flying. This evening
while biking around Swan River Preserve (just south of Swan Lake - about 1.5

There are 3 glossy ibis in the wetland where the new and old Montauk Hwy
split on the approach to Montauk. Nearby woods have decent numbers of the

[nysbirds-l] Glossy Ibis - Goose (Stafford's) Pond, Oak Orchard WMA, Genesee County

2014-08-29 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Like Pat Martin yesterday, I was able to get very good views of the Plegadis
ibis at Goose Pond today and confirm that it is a GLOSSY. The bird was at
the far northeast corner of the marsh. My description is below in my eBird
checklist. Lots of shorebirds here too. A SORA was nice to see.

Good birding!

1.2 mile(s)

Comments: I walked from the southwest end of the marsh almost to the
northeast end, moving up to the edge of the marsh to study the ibis and
shorebirds here. I was distracted much of the time by dragonflies.

Unfortunately, I left my camera in the car but I scoped the bird.
Long-legged wader with a heavy long decurved bill. Much smaller than a
Great Blue Heron but much larger than the many yellowlegs (both species)
nearby. Plumage overall was very dark, appearing blackish at a distance.
Wings and tail were dark greenish, body dark brownish. The underside and
top side of the spread wings were all dark (bird spread wings and also took
a short flight). Short whitish streaks on the rear crown, sides and back of
neck. Very thin line light blue from top part of bill to top of eyes, which
did not go around the back of the eye. Very thin light blue line from lower
part of base of bill to lower part of eyes, which also did not go around the
back of the eye. Facial skin between these lines was dark. The eyes were
dark. There were no reddish or pinkish tones in the facial skin nor the
eyes. The legs were dark with no reddish tones at the joints. The bill was
grayish at the base but most of the bill was a fleshy brown color.

[nysbirds-l] Glossy Ibis - Berry Road Marsh, Chautauqua County

2013-05-06 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
The adult GLOSSY IBIS found today by Gale VerHague showed well up until
about an hour before sunset (although it would hide for periods of time).
Around that time it took extended flights out of view, eventually returning
after 10-15 minutes each time. It flew back to the Berry Road Marsh one
last time and settled into the cattails where it slunk down and out of sight
for the night. This is the marsh on the north side of the road, just west
of the railroad tracks and about a mile east of Rt. 5 in the Town of
Pomfret.

There was also an adult male ORCHARD ORIOLE singing here.

Good birding!

Willie

[nysbirds-l] glossy ibis: East Hampton

2013-04-16 Thread Bruce Horwith
I had my FOS glossy ibis (6) this morning in a small wetland near Accabonac
Harbor in East Hampton, where they occur each spring. Presumably these are
the same group.
