January 23, 2016 Sabattis Bog (Town of Long Lake in Hamilton Co.) 7 degrees
and cloudy
Maybe this news will cheer up the folks riding out the blizzard in southern
NY today. There was a singing White-winged Crossbill at Sabattis Bog this
morning! It sang as it flew over me and was followed by a calling bird. It
has been a long time since I've heard that song! I posted fly-over flocks
of calling White-winged Crossbills in December, but I haven't heard any
recently. It was quite an exciting moment this morning and it appears they
are likely nesting.
It was an active woodpecker morning at the bog with lots of drumming and
calling. I found two Black-backed Woodpeckers (foraging, calling, and one
rattle-called), and at least 2 Hairy Woodpeckers (likely 3). There were
several Gray Jays that came for food. The Blue Jays are still at the bog -
over 10 (an unusual winter).
