Just confirmed the Ash-throated Flycatcher at the Dell Water. It was
flycatching on the side of the pond where there are 3 in hill mausoleums. It
then flew to the opposite side by the bee hives.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher Manhattan 11/9

2020-11-10 Thread Adrian Burke
Several observers looking this morning for the Manhattan Ash-throated
Flycatcher have so far failed to find the bird. In addition to looking
around the soccer fields in Fort Washington Park where it was seen
yesterday, two of us walked south to West Harlem Piers Park at W 125th
Street searching along the way to no avail. It is worth noting that a
Myiarchus flycatcher was seen by Nate O’Reilly at the southwest corner of
the Inwood Hill Park ballfields a few days ago (about 35 blocks north of
the Fort Washington Park ballfields). If this was the same bird, it would
suggest quite a wide ranging individual, so anyone looking for it might
want to check points north and south along the Hudson River greenway.

Good birding,

Adrian Burke

Is it possible the same one we saw last week at Shore Road Park?
We saw it in the section near Verrazano bridge, exactly across the water from

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher on Staten Island

2019-11-11 Thread Gus Keri
Is it possible the same one we saw last week at Shore Road Park?
We saw it in the section near Verrazano bridge, exactly across the water from
where it is being seen now.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher, Lido Beach Park West

2016-12-04 Thread John Mora

Flycatcher was still in the same western area mid afternoon.

This bird is very flighty and is often hidden. Seen twice flying off the park
inland to two pines beyond red storage hut adjacent to last large gravel
parking lot.

Northern oriole is still present as well as a flock of house finches and the
scattered red breasted nuthatches in the pines.

On the beach there were 10 dunlin mixed in with 25 sanderlings. Also seen was a
tight knit group of a dozen horned grebes performing synchronized swimming and
diving. Also present were a large number of red throated loons and fewer
common loons, often five birds in the glass. One adult cormorant flew West far
out likely double crested.

The bird was there today moving along the fence and going deeper in the
vegetation at times.  Even as far as the neighboring houses. Also, the gates to
the parking lot were closed today, so birders had to park in the nearby areas
and walk to the parking lot.

Glenn:

Many thanks. Just got the bird.
For those with a GPS the park entrance is just opposite the intersection of
Lideo Blvd. and Regent Dr,

Peter Post.

During that time we did not see the bird.

Other notable birds at Jones West End, included a *Ring-necked Pheasant*, 2

eating the fruits of Bayberry, and being harassed by a Mockingbird (anybody
up for opening a season on Mockingbirds?). Typical of the fall Ash-throated

five feet off the ground. The overall shape of the bird was a small-billed,
long tailed, slim *Myiarchus. *The head showed a crest, and the throat

undertail coverts were yellow, the yellow being more intense than most fall
Ash-throated's I have seen, which may have been a function of the overcast
day, which tends to enhance color (just as a bright sun washes color out).
The entire undertail was reddish brown and the terminal portion of the
undertail was a darker reddish brown than the rest of the tail. The
whitish-gray upperparts eliminated Great Crested and the small bill
eliminated both Great-crested and Brown-crested Flycatchers (*M. crinitus

tail rule out Dusky-capped Flycatcher (*M. tuberculifer). *At one point
the bird did pose for me at distance of less than twenty feet, but
unfortunately, my camera chose this moment to malfunction (the battery was
not seated properly, hence no power). Attempts to relocate the bird were
unsuccessful, one birder missed seeing the bird by five minutes. Wednesday
weather looks pretty miserable -perhaps the bird will stick around.

Also in the general area was an *Orange-crowned Warbler *and Ruby-crowned
Kinglet. The two *Marbled Godwits* continue, feeding on the mud flats on
the south side of Meadow Island.

As Shane Blodgett indicated in an earlier post, there was a major seabird
movement this morning along the south shore that included Red-throated
Loon, Scoter and Gannet. I joined Shai Mitra earlier in the morning at Fire
Island Field 5 to witness the spectacle. Suffice to say that RTL numbers
were in the thousands as were total Scoter numbers. One would think that
with all these birds present something interesting would appear. However,
other than six flyby *Razorbills *that were seen shortly after Shai left,
 nothing notable appeared.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher (Yes) - Queens NY

2009-11-27 Thread Robert Lewis
I observed the Ash-throated Flycatcher at the Cohancy Street location this
afternoon (11/27) around 3:05 pm.

I was shown the bird by another birder whose name I never learned. He had
evidently seen the bird in the same spot about 20 minutes earlier, then it had
flown north along the fence on Cohancy and he lost it.

The bird shows a lot of site fidelity. I'll try to describe exactly where it
was. The oft-described old red building on the NE corner with N Conduit sits on
a decrepit overgrown lot that extends to the east and north. At least two
other old buildings are on the lot, both smaller and gray. This lot is crudely
fenced but one can easily gain access to the lot about 80 feet north of the
actual corner of Cohancy and Conduit. Walk in and around to the east, looking
carefully and quietly. We found the bird just to the east of the old "garage"
perched about 8 feet off the ground in a small tree. While we watched it, it
flew briefly to another tree farther east, then to yet another closer to the
eastern edge, which borders on the subway station, elevated maybe 15 feet above
ground.

It was a bit sheltered from the wind in there, which helped.
