As a member, this does not sound very practical. Will the lucky list
manager go and drop everyone from the list every March and force
everyone to resubscribe with their membership number and card by coming
down to the club office? How do you know [EMAIL PROTECTED] is
really registered by me?
To get around this massive foo, I'll propose a solution.
If the OBC wants it's list to be closed to membership and moderated, fine.
I can manage a list called ottawa-cycling, on Topica, or on one of my own
servers (yes I have several.. geek ;^) ). It would be an open list, anyone

I wanted to provide my response to the decision concerning your club's
e-mail list I read in the e-mail digest, issue 789.
As a non-member lurker and very occasional poster, I have to say that one
effect of this e-mail list decision may well be to _increase_ membership in
OBC.
I've watched some

Good idea, Michael. Congratulations!
I will admit to being a lurker as well. Ironically, the OBCTopica forum goes
into my Hotmail Junk folder, I read it when I get the time, for amusement
more often than not. Lately, this list has developed a reputation of being
rather a waste of bandwidth.

Anyone with web access anywhere in the world,
I'm still commuting in (out out as the case may be) every day from the
Carling/Kirkwood area to near Alcatel on the March Road in Kanata.
If the roads are clear, my limit is -15 Celsius, below that it can't make it

I'm still commuting until the snow stays. An extra layer of clothes and my

not use the Ottawa River Pkwy after dark, and I keep an extra eye out for
motorists who might be turning into my path.

Although cold, the weather is decent, and the conditions can be very
pretty. Tuesday, I had a nice ride from Bell's Corners to Kanata, on
pathways, with a lovely light carpet of fallen leaves. It was so nice,
I thought of calling in well and keeping going. But I didn't.

Looking at the replies to this touchy issue, I note that many non-club
members read this list from far away and near and find the information
valuable. Some of them seem to think that the irritation that is generated
and aired here is from the board members or indeed simple club members, yet
I've had to start my commute from the Kanata Park Ride since a construction

somewhat leery about coming back on Corkstown at sunset.
The worst part of the trip is getting across 417 - the

Me, altho' not for much longer. The end of the month is it for me. It's
dark in the mornings when I leave my place in the East end so lights are a

an hour on Sunday). It's also a bit nippy in the mornings! I'm ready to
This is a great idea. If the board decides to restrict and censor this list,
I will certainly join your new list. The utility of the official OBC mailing
list would then be reduced to official announcements, I predict.

For list help,
I'm just the messenger, but have been asked to send it on since many are
interested in this development.

Bob, et al,
I agree with what you say below but must stick to what I posted earlier.
I feel it is in the best interest of the OBC to include all in the OBC mail
