Just a shot in the dark, but could you check that your cell is correct
in ThisCell? During your copying manipulations something might have
gone wrong. If you are trying to authenticate to the wrong cell, you
will of course fail.

The problem is that the afs volume is not visible in the Finder.
Have others had better experience with OpenAFS-1.4.5-Leopard on a PPC
machine? Is there a work-around to make /afs visible in the Finder?
Is there a fix for what appears to be the non-universal afssettings?
